From the Director

Dear CDS Community,

With only a few days left in Term 1, I'm happy to see our students maintain their focus and high spirits. They've been reflecting on learning goals in their digital portfolios, finishing up project work, and preparing for end-of-term assessments. We're very proud of the hard work and creativity shown by all those who participated in the Math Competition on Wednesday. I also want to acknowledge the effort shown by Ms. Van Liew's students who performed in the Arirang festival in Seoul last Sunday. It took A LOT of courage for these young musicians to perform on such a giant stage at one of the biggest music festivals in South Korea. Keep up the great work CDS Middle School!

On Wednesday, October 23rd we will hold our first Parent Teacher Conference of the school year. This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with teachers and learn more about how your children are doing so far this school year. Teachers will help you to have a better understanding of your child's needs so we can work together to support them throughout the year. I hope to see all of you at CDS next Wednesday!

Have a great week!

New CDS Athletics Website

Hello Phoenix fans!!

Today I bring you great news. CDS has now launched is very own athletics webpage. As of right now you can find it on the Middle School & High School homepage and soon on the CDS Home page as well. On the new website, you will find all athletic information in one place. Need to know the scores, schedules of games, departure times of buses or locations of schools we will be heading to for competitions? Find them on the athletic website. Need to know when orientations & try-outs are or where to sign up for the teams? Find them on the athletic website. Need the After School Permission Form or Athlete Participation Form? That's right, find them on the athletic website. I am also currently working on getting some of the games to be live streamed, so that if you can't make it to the games in person to see your child participate, then you can at least tune in to still see them play from wherever you are!!!!

Please note, there have been some changes to how athletics will function this year, so please take the time to read through the new Student-Athlete/Parent Handbook found under the "Resources" tab and also look over all of the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

I am hoping with the new Athletics website that everything will be easier to find as it will be all in one place. If there are any suggestions on what else you might like on the website to make things easier for you as a parent or a student, please contact me, Mr. Monette, and I will do my best to include it.

Sincerely,

Mr. Monette

Goooooooooooooo Phoenix!

The International Alliance of Youth Writing

Greetings CDS community!

We have news of some interesting opportunities for student enrichment!

The MS English department is excited to be joining The International Alliance of Youth Writing Centers by creating our own center here in the MS building. The Alliance is a group of like-minded independent writing groups with the common goal of providing young people with a place to write and be heard. Of course, we can’t do this without the writers. So, students, if you have an interest and aptitude in writing and being published, we are here to support. In the coming weeks, we will be offering this enrichment opportunity during Flex.

In addition to the writing alliance, any and all students are encouraged to join Mr. Cavisin and Mr. Baker for NaNoWriMo! What’s that you say? Well, it is National Novel Writing Month, taking place in November. Details to be announced!

NaNoWriMo Club Information Session

November is right around the corner and that means students will soon have the opportunity to take part in the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) Club with Mr. Cavasin and Mr. Baker! This is not only a great chance for students to gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of writing but to work and grow as a community of writers.

The MS English dept. will be holding a quick information session about National Novel Writing Month on Tues., Oct. 22nd, in Rm. 207, during LAB, for interested students!

If students can’t attend the session, they are encouraged to visit either Mr. Cavasin or Mr. Baker and he will fill you in on this unique opportunity.

CDS MS Students Perform at the Arirang Festival in Seoul

On Sunday, October 13th, fourteen 7th graders loaded a bus to perform in the Seoul Arirang Festival.

The students have been preparing diligently over the past month and a half for the performance. With the beautiful weather, the students took the stage in Gwanghwamun Plaza in the afternoon and shared a piece which combined a samulnori rhythm with Arirang and BTS's Idol melody.

This is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity for the students, so I am proud of them for being brave and doing their best at the performance. Later in the day, the students were part of turning a Shindae (Korean maypole) as they danced with other teams. We also saw a variety of pungmulnori performances as we walked around the plaza. It was a lovely way to spend an autumn day and celebrate the musical traditions and rich culture of this beautiful country!

CDS MS Math Competition

On Wednesday the 16th, presentations were held for the 2019-2020 CDS MS Mathematics Competition. The theme for this year’s competition was “Math from 1900 to 1945”.

While this is only a 45 year time period, there was a lot that was happening in the world that involved math. The topics presented ranged from Albert Einstein’s Theory of Special Relativity to Fractals to Infinity.

With such a wide variety it was exciting to learn about discoveries made during this time. The top three teams won Dalton Cup points along with gift vouchers. Before I announce the winners, I would like to thank the CDS Math Team, especially Ms. Black and I would like to thank the judges, Mr. Howell, Mr. Thach, and Mr. Keel for helping make this event a success. Now on to the results.

Collaboration with HS students in Math Class

Recently in Algebra, grade eight were paid a visit from year 12 Applied Math students to help them learn more about applying functions. Applied Math students shared artwork they created using mathematical functions in Desmos with the grade 8 students who have also been studying functions this term. Students were able to learn new computer skills and had a blast interacting with the older students.

Studying about plants in Science class

This week in 5th grade general science students continued to immerse themselves in the study of plants.

We spent time outdoors identifying various species of flowering plants (angiosperms) and plants that grow cones (gymnosperms). Students also observed seed structures and discussed how plants distribute their seeds.

Students found that plants have very creative ways of dispersing their seeds, making use of the wind, passing animals, and other ingenious methods to spread their offspring. By delving deeper into how classification can help us understand the world around us, students learned a lot about how the simple act of spending time surrounded by nature helps us grow.
