What's Happening This Week?

Writer's Workshop: Prompt Writing - students will practice writing to different prompts this week. We will be reviewing where to get ideas, using graphic organizers and how best to use our time. Ask your child about the Night Zookeeper. We have a 6 week trial to this wonderful website that gives the students a chance to write creatively and share their work with others.

Reader's Workshop: We will be reviewing the skill of writing constructed responses. Students will be reading a short passages and then follow the model we set up in class to write a quality response.

Word Study: Our focus for our word study lists this week will be past tense verbs that end in -ed. Word study tests will be taken on Friday.

Math Workshop: This week we continue to study fractions. Students have learned about the parts of fractions, and have created fractions using real world objects. We will continue exploring the value of fractions and placing them on number lines.

Social Studies: We will begin our unit on economics this week. For the final project, students will be working in groups to create a business, come up with a product or service to sell to their classmates. Students are earning money through a class economy that they will then use for shopping at other students businesses.

Questions for Reading

It is important for students to not only be able to answer questions about the events in the story, but questions about why the events happened and what decisions the author made. This leads to a deeper understanding of the text. These questions are showing up more and more in class and state assessments. If you would like to make reading at home more meaningful, check out the link below. It is a list of possible questions to ask your child about their book to get them to think about what they've read.
