Check Out Our New Logo
At the December meeting, the Friends of the Pawtucket Public Library voted to purchase a new logo design. Designer Aggie Barnes took the group's ideas and suggestions and created the logo seen here. We are excited to use the new logo in our promotional materials.
Friends Donate New Children's Books to the Salvation Army
To contribute to the donated holiday gifts that families with children receive from the Salvation Army on High Street, the Friends donated $300 worth of new children's books to encourage reading and literacy with the families in need. Books included board books, picture books, books for beginning readers, graphic novels, chapter books and both fiction and non-fiction.
Friends Awarded Grant from Bristol County Savings Charitable Foundation
One important way that the Friends of the Pawtucket Library support the library is through grants that they can apply for as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. On Dec. 15th, Bristol County Savings Bank Charitable Foundation awarded the FOL a grant to support the Pawtucket Public Library's Literacy Program, which offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for adult immigrants. The library works with the Rhode Island Family Literacy Initiative - RIFLI, an 18-year-old adult education and workforce development agency. RIFLI offers ESL, Citizenship Preparation, Digital Literacy, Math, Conversation and Transition to College and Careers courses in area libraries, schools, and community centers, and in the NetworkRI employment center, to provide adult literacy services to people in our area.
The grant will specifically support two courses: Advanced ESL and Transitions to College and Careers. These courses are intended to help immigrants transition from traditional ESL classes into mainstream college or training programs to advance their careers. They are designed to respond to gaps in the continuum of area ESL education. (A collaborating agency, the RI Institute for Labor Studies and Research, continues to offer beginning and intermediate level ESL classes at the Library.)

Lobby Book Sale Updates
After the December Meeting, Renee started adding color stickers on the spine of the books on the Lobby Book Sale shelves. After a couple weeks, any remaining items on the book sale shelf that have that color sticker will be removed and new "used" books will be added to the shelf. The older items will be moved to the basement book storage area. The hope for this system is that we move books that aren't selling and make room for new donations to keep the Lobby Book Sale fresh.
Sponsoring Holiday Luncheon for Library Staff
On Thursday, Dec. 21st, the Friends of the Pawtucket Library sponsored the annual Staff Christmas Luncheon for all those great people who work at the Pawtucket Public Library. Check out some photos of the library staff enjoying a meal and dessert catered by Eastside Marketplace.
