Husky Happenings
October 22-27
From Mr. Martin
I am pretty excited about our first gr. 8 field trip to Timber Ridge Adventure Center. I have attached a description as well as pre and post instructional objectives.
This field trip is designed to align with the anti-bullying curriculum our 8th graders received while in 7th grade: “Take a Stand, Lend a Hand”. Students will be participating in a low-ropes course at Timber Ridge Adventure Center, following our reading of Stargirl and other anti-bullying-related novels. During the different team building activities, students will be working in groups to solve problems and learning to cooperate with their peers. Our challenge course follows the philosophy of “Your Challenge, Your Choice” to incorporate elements of fun and excitement in a noncompetitive, safe, and supportive atmosphere. Individuals may choose their level of participation for each event. Objectives for Our Challenge Course Program include: Build team trust, Improve communication skills, Enhance self-confidence, Expand leadership skills, Enjoy the great outdoors.
Describe in-class preparation before the trip:
Reading of the novel Stargirl, as well as having discussions about the positive effects of teamwork, instituting a random acts of kindness challenge in the grade level, students creating public service announcements talking about bullying to their peers, writing argumentative essays about bullying and its effects on the social climate.
Describe follow-up work in class and/or homework:
A reflective essay will be required after the field-trip as a summative assignment to the entire unit.

FROM OUR COUNSELORS AND SOCIAL WORKER:
October is bully awareness month. This year 5th-8th will compete to see how many students can be reported for giving an online or personal compliment. This will be a fun way for you to learn ways to report online bullying. Currently the 6th grade is in the lead, closely followed by the 5th grade.
MINDSET MOMENT: Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you land among the stars.
