Math Updates
In Math, we began Unit 2 on Number Stories and Arrays. We kicked off the unit learning about extended facts for addition and subtraction. The students had to use basic addition and subtraction facts to solve problems with larger numbers. We then began looking at number stories where we studied diagrams or pictures to help us solve them. We used situation diagrams and other representations to help us as well.
Building a READING LIFE
In Reading this week, we continued our Read Aloud of Stone Fox.
The students are loving the book!
We practiced making predictions that tell not only the main things they think are likely to happen later in the story, but also include details about how those things might happen. We talked about how you do this by drawing on specifics from the story and including details in their predictions.
Then, we practiced retelling a story as a way to lay the story out for others so it can be a topic for discussion, and for ourselves so we can think it over. We focused on telling the "gist" of the story. We learned that it helps to start at the beginning then take big steps across the story by telling the most important parts.
Word Study
Word Study will be new next week.
Monday nights- Students are to sort their words and record them in their notebooks. They are to also record their discovery or rule for the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday nights- Students should sort their words and read them as they sort. They can practice writing them on paper, whiteboards, or typing them. NO WRITTEN homework is required on these nights.
Thursday nights- Students are to ask an adult to quiz them on their words. They write the headers and then record the words as they are called out. The adult should use the notebook to correct the sort and ask the student to practice any words that were spelled incorrectly. This can be done on the back of the homework sheet. This paper should then be returned to school Friday morning.
Friday- there will be a test given
Writing long & strong
This week in Writing, we revised our stories by asking ourselves, "What's the most important part of this story?" and then we worked to develop that section. This part of the story is where we want our readers to slow down and pay attention. This could be the happiest or the saddest part of our story. We call this part the Heart of the story.
We then worked with partners using our checklist to see how our stories were developing and what we needed to develop further. We worked on adding more important parts to our paragraphs.
