Permian Period

286-245 million years ago

Major geologic events of that time period.

Deserts became larger in tropical regions. The permian period, which ended in the largest mass extinction the earth has ever known, began about 299 million years ago. Being cold-blooded, reptiles had to find ways to deal with big daily variations in temperature, from below freezing at night to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees celsius) during the day.

Climate and Environment

The climate was cold and arid. By the early Permian, the two great continents of the Paleozoic, and Gondwana had collided to form the supercontinent Pangea.Inside the "C"was the Tethys Ocean. Because Pangea was so immense, the interior portions of the continent had much cooler, drier than has existed in the carboniferous. The Environment was frozen under ice caps. One of the important groups of animals dominated the Permian landscape: synapsids. It had skulls with a single temporal opening and are thought to be the lineage that eventually led to mammals.

Dominant organisms living at that time - animals and plant.

Reptiles-dimetrodon, and conifer. Scientists are unclear about what cause the mass extinction. Some point to evidence of catastrophic Volcanic activity in Siberia. and China (areas in the northern part of the "C" shaped Pangea.) This series of massive eruptions would have initially cause a rapid cooling of Global temperatures leading to increased glaciations. Other scientists point to indications of a massive asteroid impacting the southernmost tip of the "C" in what is now Australia. Whatever the cause, great dying closed the paleozoic Era.

What are the main things travelers might like to see?

Alps, the Appalachian, and the Rocky mountains. Prickly pear cactus, ants, spiny lizards, gila monsters, rattle snakes, garter snakes, red cardinals, hummingbirds, turkey, vultures, sand, rocks, and frogs. Plants like flowers ad tree's of all kinds. Some wild animals like Apex predator, a genus known as dimetrodon. This animal had a lizard-like and a large bony "snail" fin on it's back that was probably used for thermoregulation.

What travelers would pack for comfort and safety

You would need food and water, flashlight's ,and good amount of clothes, first aid kit,and something to call an emergency on,and also something like a resource book so you know what you're seeing. They should pack bug spray because of the many insects. They should pack fresh water because there is mainly saltwater during this period. Blanket's and pillows if they are going on a long trip and going to have to sleep on the way.

Dangers might travelers face

Assuming the climate was survivable, there were some fairly large reptiles, like dimetrodon, whom were dangerous predators. Another danger would be the large extinction event at the end of the period.
