News from the Davis Library Media Center
Vision: Davis students learn to seek answers and knowledge not only for academic achievement, but for the ultimate goal of using information to create, innovate, and contribute to the world.
Reading: Students may check out 3 books for a period of 2 weeks at a time. The library is open from 7:45 AM to 3:45 PM daily. Students may find time to come on their own, or they are guaranteed a check-out opportunity bi-weekly through their ELA class.
Innovation: A Makerspace is a space to create opportunities outside the classroom for students to create, innovate, and try out their learning in creative ways.
Makerspaces use the principles of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) to spark students learning and critical thinking skills.
Activities can range from the artsy to the high-tech---from Legos and Tinker Toys to 3-D Printers!! We include building materials such as Kapla and Legos, consumable materials such as clay, cardboard, and popsicle sticks, and technology such as Makey-Makey, Spheros and Ozobots. Anything that pushes a student to build and explore ideas, utilize their prior knowledge, and seek out new learning to accomplish a specific task could be a Makerspace activity.
This year, our Makerspace will be open all day for 5th grade Science Classes. Each science class will get time to learn about our Maker projects of the 9-weeks and drop in for independent and small group enrichment. Sixth graders can sign up to be a part of the afterschool Maker Mondays.
