TVUSD UPDATE
April 10, 2020 Update #14
A Message of Gratitude from Superintendent Ritter
Dear TVUSD Families and Community,
I want to express my gratitude and thanks for your patience and support during this very uncertain time. As you can imagine, it has been a challenge for our district team to make the wholesale adjustments that have been asked of us in such a short period of time.
As you are aware, since we received orders to close school on March 13, we have shifted from a traditional classroom-based model for instruction to the distance learning approach our children are engaged in. What I am most proud of is the commitment of our teachers, staff, and administrators have for our students. The time and energy that has been poured into the transition to distance learning is truly amazing. The enthusiasm and joy they bring to their virtual classrooms, where they engage our students and provide not only educational benefits but also an escape from isolation and an opportunity to interact with the teachers and classmates they are missing is truly remarkable. This is why I encourage you and your children to truly engage in the learning opportunities that are provided in the comfort and safety of your home.
Just last week, our County Health Agency extended the order to keep schools closed until June 19. This order goes beyond the end of our school year, so we know we will not be returning to a traditional model of instruction during this school year, making the distance learning program even more important. This extension has also created a level of concern within our community regarding the end of year activities, especially our senior students. We are working with site leaders to determine how we can best address these rights of passage activities and will be getting detailed information regarding these events out next week.
I need to recognize our Temecula Fresh Nutrition Services team. Their efforts to provide meals for our students has been remarkable. We realize that there were some challenges early in the week as we worked our way through a new model for food prep and distribution. Still, the team took time to evaluate and make changes that appear to make the process much easier and faster for families, which I am sure is greatly appreciated.
I recognize that these are unsettling times and that I cannot begin to comprehend the impacts of the pandemic on each family. What I can state with confidence is that we will continue to keep what is best for our students at the forefront of all decisions we make regarding their educational, social, and emotional well-being to the best of our ability under our current conditions.
Wishing you all a safe and healthy Easter weekend. I hope you will join me in celebrating life's many blessings with family and friends, virtually, of course. I am deeply thankful and grateful to all in our community for the resilience and genuine care that I see happening daily.
Sincerely,
Tim Ritter
Superintendent
General Updates and Information
Due to the current restrictions and concerns expressed this week from county public health about increasing limits of person to person contact over the next few weeks, TVUSD is requesting that school sites limit campus access. The site principals are currently developing plans as to the best method to allow future access to retrieve items from campus. The schedule and decisions will be site-based and communicated by each site to families and staff directly.
Is the District Using Zoom for Students?
No. The District has advised staff not to utilize ZOOM for student contacts or instruction. We are using it to facilitate some district-level meetings and contacts, but nothing involving students.
General Refund Requests?
In general, requests for refunds for services or events that are not able to proceed due to the current COVID-19 orders through June 19, 2020, should be submitted to the appropriate department or school site. At the high school level, we have confirmed that proms and grad nites will have to be canceled and refunds will be issued. We ask your patience with processing refunds. All other senior activities are currently being evaluated and awaiting further review, input, and decisions. We anticipate sharing more information next week.
What is the Best Way to Contact the District and School Admin/Office Staff?
Contact with teachers should be handled through students online learning programs or email, as established by the teacher.
