January Newsletter
Dear Maple Elementary Families,
Happy 2022! We are excited to welcome students back to Maple Elementary to begin the second semester this week. Students will be bringing home their report cards on Friday, January 7th. NWEA assessments are being completed over the next 2 weeks and student reports will be sent home soon.
Maple Elementary is teaming up with Nothing Bundt Cakes for a Valentine's Day fundraiser. Students will be bringing home order forms on Friday, January 7th. Orders are due on February 7th and bundlets (mini bundt cakes) be sent home with students on February 14th. Bundtlets can be ordered for $5, and we can only accept cash.
As we continue through the winter months, please make certain that your child is dressed properly for recess. If the temperature or wind chill is above twenty degrees, students will go outdoors for recess. Heavy coats, hats, gloves and scarves are important to protect students from the cold weather and ensure students stay healthy.
Wishing You Well,
Dr. Rena Hawkins, Principal, hawkinsr@smithville.k12.mo.us
Mrs. Ashley Doll, Assistant Principal, dolla@smithville.k12.mo.us

Information from the Counselor, Mrs. Hough
This month we are talking about the social-emotional skill of Empathy. We are using this definition at school:
Empathy: the ability to understand and connect to the feelings of another.
Empathy is a crucial skill for being in community with others and a powerful skill to develop in personal and professional relationships. We are focusing on a few key pieces of Empathy: knowing how we feel, having language to describe those feelings, understanding what others are feeling, and listening to others well so that we can connect in more meaningful ways. We will reflect on powerful images that will inspire conversations about emotions, connection, and friendship. We will celebrate what makes us different and find the amazing things that bring us together.
