ISD 709 News 9/17/21
From Superintendent John Magas
We are coming to the end of our first full week of school and fall is just around the corner. I have seen so many successes and have heard about so many more over these past few days. I just met with our district’s parent advisory group, as well as with a team from Leadership Duluth, and both groups shared a lot of positive feedback.
Again, there is nothing better than seeing our students in school, all day every day, learning and spending time with their classmates. It is also great to have our students and families participating in our fall athletics and activities!
We are also very excited to see the results from having added over 30 positions to support our students. These positions have included counselors, interventionists, deans of students and others through our recent federal ESSER funding. We also received a grant for nearly two million dollars over the next five years to support student mental health needs.
That’s not to say that there haven’t been some challenges. Often, in the second week, some of the road bumps of the start of the year begin to surface. We continue to work through issues related to a shortage of bus drivers, custodians, paraprofessionals, and child nutrition employees. As these needs emerge we will work together to address them systematically.
Safety continues to be a top priority for all of us. We have had a few situations where students have come to school with COVID symptoms and later had positive tests. Please make sure that you err on the side of caution and stay home if you or your student has symptoms.
We appreciate your support as we learn and grow together this fall!

Update: Safe Learning Plan
Details at www.ISD709.org/SafeLearningPlan
Please Make Sure Your Student Has a Mask From Home
Please understand that school buses and schools have a limited number of masks available for use when students forget or lose theirs and be sure your child has their own mask from home when they come to school. Last year schools received state funding to provide all staff and students with masks - that funding is not available this year.
