Understanding Lexile
A Lexile reading range is generated for every student who takes the MAP Growth Reading test. This range is expressed as a 3 to 4-digit number. The Lexile range is expressed in 150 point increments. The bottom 100 points of the range represents the independent reading level and the top 50 points represents where the student may need instructional support. Below is an example.
A student has a Lexile range of 850 - 1000. Books in the range of 850 - 950 are at the level where the student should be able to handle on their own. Books in the range above 950 may require support from the teacher.
To help students to become college and career ready, check out this LINK to see recommended Lexile ranges for grades K-12.
Lexile.com offers a variety of resources to teachers and students. Students and/or teachers can enter Lexile ranges, content interest and difficulty levels to generate reading lists and/or book selections.
