As we close up the end of the year, it is important that we continue to strive for high attendance. We need your support in meeting our goal of 90% attendance for each student 90% of the time. During the second semester, we have experienced a high percentage of illness that has impacted our attendance. To meet our goal we need excellent attendance over the last two months. We appreciate your support in getting your child to school each and every day. We will be hosting attendance parties on May 24th for every child that meets the 90% goal.

Notes from the School Nurse
If you have lived in Missouri in the spring, you are very aware of allergy symptoms. Along with Spring we can have a lot of pollen in the air! Many students come to the health room complaining of allergy symptoms. We are not allowed to dispense any medication to your child. Students can carry one dose of over the counter medications such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, cough drops, and allergy medication. Please help your student feel well at school. MAP testing and allergy symptoms do not go well together! Save yourself a phone call from the nurse.
Is it a Cold or Allergies?
It is often difficult to differentiate between cold and allergy symptoms. Symptoms may be similar. However, the following may help you differentiate between the two.
- Drainage from a cold will start off clear, but often turns yellow or green after 3-5 days. Children with allergies will continue to have a clear, runny nose.
- A child with a cold usually improves within 10-14 days, while allergy symptoms might linger until the first frost.
- Children with colds may experience fever and muscle aches; children with allergies will not.
- Allergy symptoms may vary with the weather. Symptoms may be worse on windy days when pollen counts are higher.
- Children with allergies will often have dark circles under their eyes, called allergic shiners. They might also have a small crease near the bottom of their nose called an allergic salute caused from pushing their nose up because it is itchy. The nasal mucosa is often pale and swollen with allergy; it is usually red and inflamed with a cold.
Avoiding Allergies:
Since pollens peak in the late morning and early afternoon (10 am to 4 pm), it is helpful to stay indoors at this time. Keep the windows of your house and car closed to minimize your child’s exposure. Check pollen counts and do not let your child outside when lawns are being mowed.
**Consult with your child’s health care provider when symptoms are persistent. **
ATTENTION PARENTS OF INCOMING 8TH GRADE STUDENTS
All students in Missouri are mandated to receive both a Tdap and a Meningitis vaccine before they can begin school as an 8th grader. If your student is attending summer school, they must have written proof of these vaccinations before they can attend summer school. If you do not have written proof of vaccination next August, your 8th grade student WILL NOT be given their schedule and cannot attend school until this written proof is on file with the school nurse. Please review your student’s vaccinations and make an appointment with your physician to get a Tdap and Meningitis vaccine for your child. The Boone County Health Department has walk in vaccination clinics Monday-Friday from 8 AM-4:30 PM. I am not allowed to contact a physician for this information. It must be given to the school by a parent or guardian.
