Living History: Bill Mercer

Join The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza for an intimate and interactive conversation with award-winning veteran sportscaster Bill Mercer, a 2002 inductee into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. As a broadcaster with CBS affiliate KRLD Radio and Television in Dallas in 1963, Mercer covered the breaking news of the Kennedy assassination, reporting live from Dallas police headquarters. At a midnight press briefing on November 22, 1963, Mercer was the first to initially inform suspect Lee Harvey Oswald that he had been formally charged with the murder of President Kennedy. Mercer is co-author of the memoir, When the News Went Live: Dallas 1963 (2004). This interactive discussion will feature photographs and KRLD-TV video footage from the Museum’s Collection.

The Museum Guide to the Pacific War

This lesson is designed for ALL grades 1st-12th with the objective of providing a detail focus or overview of the major components of the Pacific War. Many schools across Texas and the United States cannot come to the National Museum of the Pacific War, so this lesson provides a live-stream interpretive tour of one area of the museum campus of interest: The George Bush Gallery, The Nimitz Gallery, The Pacific Combat Zone, The Japanese Garden of Peace, The Memorial Garden, and The Plaza of the Presidents. Teachers can choose which areas of the museum and what themes they wish to concentrate on during their 45-minute videoconference lesson.

Hawk Talk

Birds of prey, also known as raptors, are a common sight in the skies. During the program, we will take an up-close look at a live Red-Tailed Hawk to discuss the important body structures and their functions. We will investigate the hawks' diet, their role in the food web, the habitats in which they are found, and the adaptations that allow them to be such powerful predators.

Coastal Science Investigation

TPWD's Coastal Fisheries Kills and Spills Team are marine biologists who are trained to determine the probable cause of large-scale fish kills in Texas bays and the Gulf of Mexico. During this program, we'll meet up with members of the Kills and Spills Team to act as fish crime scene investigators at a real fish kill. In this CSI-inspired investigation, we'll use environmental clues like dissolved oxygen, salinity, and water samples to figure out "whodunnit."
NOTE: We will be showing video and images from a real fish kill. Students will see fish at various stages of decomposition.
