January 30 marked the grand opening of the MidSouth Community Federal Credit Union branch at Hutchings College and Career Academy. This branch is open to the public and employs several Bibb County students, providing hands-on work experience as part of the school's banking pathway.
"We're delighted to be here and to be able to make a difference," said MidSouth Community FCU President Roy Bibb.
Jamie Jordan, High Demand Career Initiative Program Manager for the Georgia Department of Economic Development, was the keynote speaker for the event. He said that partnerships like the one between MidSouth Community FCU and the District help develop a strong workforce and stimulate growth for the area.
"We have to see more of these in every industry we have in our state," Jordan said.

MidSouth Community Federal Credit Union members in the surrounding community are invited to conduct their banking business at the new location at 1780 Anthony Road. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school within the credit union’s 13-county community charter. The branch hours are 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Earlier this month, community members had the chance to come into schools to serve as "Principal for a Day." Representatives from local businesses and other organizations signed up and were partnered with schools at every grade level.

This event gave stakeholders the opportunity to see what life is like inside our schools.

"I am truly amazed at how many hats you wear in your administrative role, and yet you still make time every day to greet your students one by one as they enter the building," said Georgia Doom sales manager Tiffany Baskerville to Hutchings College and Career Academy Principal Barbara Alston.

The Bibb County School District will open Pre-Kindergarten registration for the 2018-2019 school year February 26-March 9. All applications for the Pre-K lottery will be processed online through the District’s website. There are currently 836 Pre-K slots available to children who are 4 years old on or before September 1, 2018. Selection is based on a random computer lottery, and there is no cost to participate.

Students may attend Pre-K at their zoned neighborhood school or parents may choose to register them at one of four alternative locations: Northwoods Academy, Alexander II Magnet School, Burdell-Hunt Magnet School or Vineville Academy of the Arts. Transportation will not be provided to non-zoned schools and parents may only register their child for one school.

Zachary Griffin, a recent graduate of Middle Georgia State University and a first-year teacher at Rutland Middle School, was selected to receive a $1,000 New Teacher Assistance grant from the Georgia Power Foundation.

This program recognizes first-year educators nominated by the public colleges in Georgia. These candidates must have been in the top 25 percent of their graduating class and obtain a full-time teaching contract in Georgia's public schools. Way to go, Mr. Griffin!

Bibb County students traveled to Cobb County earlier this month to compete in the State Games Winter Olympics. Students competed in the Unified Bowling and Basketball Competitions and brought home medals in both. They proudly represented our district with unity between our special education and general education populations.
