Hallinan Elementary
Hawk Squawk - 9/24/20
Principal's Message
Dear Hallinan Families,
This week I had the pleasure of "popping in" to some of our virtual classrooms. I loved seeing and hearing your children learn! I know this is not the classroom experience any of us want, but I am so proud of the student's courage, perseverance and positivity. I hope to be able to visit every classroom by the middle of next week.
To help us keep classes running smoothly and your students on task, here on some ways you can support your student in being an independent learner:
- Read your teacher's weekly newsletter - it provides important weekly information and schedule
- Provide your student a private and quiet space
- Be mindful of background noises, including TV's, phone calls, pets and siblings
- Make sure your student is prepared with all materials at their work station before class
- Students should complete all classroom assignments and assessments independently; just like in school we want students to try their best first before reaching out to an adult for support
- If your student has a question about their assignments, please encourage them to raise their hand and ask questions
- If YOU have concerns about anything class-related, including your student’s assignments, please email the teacher to discuss (we don't want to take away precious learning time from our students)
Last week we introduced a button link to a spreadsheet that holds lots of helpful information for families. Today, we've created a folder - Hallinan Help for Families for Distance Learning . It turns out, we have lots more information to share: Cohort Schedule, Google Codes, Specials Rotation Schedule, Technology Support and Information and Tips for Accessing Zoom.
I was able to visit Hallinan this week to check on our construction progress - that's me in the "new" Library in the photo below. I've always loved how warm and inviting our Library is and it is going to be even better. Please see below under Hallinan Renovation for more photos from my visit. I cannot wait to welcome you all back into Hallinan.
Stay safe and well. And, read a book!

Counseling Corner with Ms. E
Dearest families, celebrating you and your students as you have shown such C O U R A G E in starting our virtual school year. Wow! Yet, this is hard. I also believe we can brave through it together as a Hallinan family by asking for help, celebrating the small steps, & taking many deep breaths of grace.
To support your courageous conversations and tools for helping your kiddos, I post 1 lesson each Monday in my SEL Google Classroom. [Also, I have Family Resources there + on my Clever page.] To meet with me, of for your child to, please use this form: https://forms.gle/xz9JXAPZrqEKBJzu5 You may also use my email or this form to share requests, ideas & resources for me to team up with our families during this time.
Today, I am grateful for student courageous resilience & kindness. Enjoy creative courage from Xiner Xu, 4th Grade.

What is i-Ready?
Over the next six weeks, elementary and middle school students will complete two on-line i-Ready assessments; one is for math and the other is for reading. i-Ready is a program that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform and tailor instruction to accelerate growth. We will conduct these assessments three times per year, and results will be shared with parents.
The i-Ready Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions to suit your child’s needs. Each item a student receives is based on their answer to the previous question. For example, a series of correct answers will result in slightly harder questions, while a series of incorrect answers will yield slightly easier ones. The purpose of this is not to give your child a score or grade but to determine how to best support their learning. Please view this two-minute introductory video, Intro Video to iReady for Families
Our elementary schedule will begin with students in Grades 3-5; math will be first, and then reading. Primary students need more time to get settled into the school routine, and their i-Ready assessments will begin in October.
Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
LOSD took a step up in celebrating our diversity and unity this week with the marking of Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated each year from September 15 to October 15. This tradition started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. During this month we recognize the amazing contributions Latinos and Latinas have made in our country. Following are few readings and resources to enjoy with your children.
Hispanic Heritage Month Resources For Parents, Teachers & Kids
Celebrating Latino Culture With Our Kids
We plan to bring attention each month to cultures, heritages and initiatives and continue our broader focus on inclusion through the work of the board-appointed Diversity Equity, Inclusion & Access Committee and the work of our Equity and Family Engagement TOSA, Teresa Sanchez. We encourage everyone to feel empowered to be engaged in these discussions.
