Carnegie Chronicle
October 2023
Note from the Director
Happy Autumn everyone! My favorite season is upon us, and I have some great news to share. We received the all-inclusive bid from Otis Elevator, and we have contacted them to accept it and get on their schedule to modernize our elevator! Their bid was a much more palatable amount of $118,000. Our fantastic community has already raised $99,522 in only two months, so we are able to make the down payment, and the second payment. The third and final payment will be due in a couple of months, once most of the work is completed, and I am confident we can do it!
The Elevated Garden Party was a big contributor to the fundraising effort, and we have another event planned for this Saturday. Please see the event details below and join us for a spooky fun fall party!
Our annual 'DocFest @ the Carnegie' documentary film festival will be held on 4 Fridays in November and December - see flyer below!
Warm regards,
Christina Danos
Unable to use the stairs? We are happy to help!
We encourage patrons to use our online catalog or call 479-253-8754 for book requests, and we will put them out on the curbside cart in front of the Annex building.
Thank you for your support and patience during this process. We are looking forward to these upgrades so our little elevator will run like new!
Look for this newsletter on the third Tuesday of each month. This gives us time to wrap up the previous month, and let you know what's coming up the following month.

Science + Philosophy Discussion Group
Come explore “the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.” We know the answer is 42, but what is the question? Wednesdays and Thursdays at 12:30 PM. Wednesdays we look top down through the lens of morality, currently discussing Charles Taylor's The Ethics of Authenticity. Thursdays we view bottom up with Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Sometimes we put the GPT-4 Babelfish in our ear for a translation, looking for order in the chaos. First Friday Book Club
Drop into the Library Annex Meeting Room on Friday, November 3rd at 10:30am to discuss Whereabouts by Jhumpa Lahiri and pick up a copy of next month's book Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz. This “spectacularly impressive” (Washington Post) and riveting thriller weaves a classic whodunit worthy of Agatha Christie into a chilling, ingeniously original modern-day mystery. Magpie Murders will be discussed on Friday, December 1st at 10:30am.
