The Articles of Confederation

The pros and cons of America's first government

The Pros

The Articles of Confederation began to unite the states so they would rely on each other for common defense, securing liberties, and shared welfare. It also established a congress and was a good baseline for future government.

The Cons

The Articles of Confederation didn't balance power between federal government and states, could not levy taxes, could not regulate trade, and didn't mention slaves at all. The states were too independent for the Articles and the national government wasn't able to enforce their laws so the Articles didn't work very well.

The Articles

The Articles of Confederation were a good idea at the time and were a step in the right direction to a free government, but there were too many flaws in the document for it to be effective. It was a great foundation and stepping stone but it could not stand alone and be efficient.
