Hello from Kendra Noll, our Counseling Intern!
My name is Kendra Noll and I am so excited to be at Sunflower for the next four months working alongside Mrs. Gabriel as the school counseling intern. I have already been having so much fun getting to know students, working in classrooms, and meeting the school staff. To share a bit about myself, I am from Lawrence and live there with my husband Kevin who is a product design engineer at a speaker company. We love to be outside, travel, hike, and design and build home projects in our free time.
Prior to my internship, I worked as a Director for the Boys & Girls Club at Schwegler Elementary for 4.5 years and as a Director of Operations for Elementary Programs for 3 years in Lawrence. Before that, I worked for a Government Housing Authority where I helped run a youth center, and for Communities in Schools in an elementary school in Austin, TX. I received my undergraduate degrees in music and anthropology from KU and am now excited to see where my Masters in School Counseling from Fort Hays State will take me. I love working with children and look forward to working with all of the students, families, and teachers at Sunflower over the following months!
Last Chance to Sign Up for Chat 'n Chew for 1st and 2nd Graders
What is Chat ‘n Chew?
Chat ‘n Chew is a program that gives children the chance to listen to adults read books and discuss these great reads with their friends. Parents volunteer twice a month to read to a small group of children. Each Chat ‘n Chew group will meet during lunch and while the children eat, their parent sponsor will read one or two picture books. After they read each book, the children will discuss the book. The books can be brought in from home, checked out from the public library, or borrowed from Sunflower’s media center.
Who can participate?
Chat ‘n Chew is a program for 1st and 2nd graders (3rd and 4th graders have the chance to participate in Novel Navigators). Students and parents need to sign the form below and return it to Mrs. Rains in the LIT Lab by Friday, January 25th. Chat ‘n Chew groups will be formed and announced the week of February 11th and will begin meeting the 1st week in March.
How can I become a sponsor?
Fill out the Google form (click on the link below) Select which day(s) that work best for you. 1st grade eats lunch from 10:50-11:20 and 2nd grade eats from 12:00-12:30. I will be happy to help you select great read-alouds. I will also provide each coach with a list of discussion starter questions. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. can also sponsor a group!
