Welcome to the Spring 2021 term at KAS! We hope you had a lovely winter break, and we are happy to be back together for this new term.
歡迎來到KAS 2020-21學年的春季。我們希望您都度過了一個愉快的寒假，我們也很開心回到學校開始上課。

Two murals were installed over the winter break on our campus.

在這寒假期間，校園內多了兩幅壁畫。

The first is in the lower elementary playground on the north facing wall. It was proposed and completed by two G11 students, Amelie Lin and Elaina Wang. Julie Lin (11), Amber Lay (11), Mia Chen (11), Dora Wang (9), Radika Tan (9), Saaya Wan (9) all assisted on the project.

The second is located on the back gate guard house campus-facing east wall. It was completed by a local artist named David Wang, assisted and arranged by G11 student Jai Chieh.

第二幅是在後門警衛室旁面東邊的牆上。這是由一位台灣本土的藝術家David Wang所繪製，並且是我們11年級的學生Jai Chieh所統籌和協助完成。

We want to thank our awesome HS students. We want to thank Mr. C and Ms. Souchon for their support and encouragement of our young artists at KAS. We want to thank our amazing facilities team. Thanks also to Ms. Rock for her relentless support of HS student leadership.

Middle School IB MYP to DP Parent Information Meeting

Middle School parents are invited to attend an informational meeting to understand the basics of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program and how that continues into KAS High School and the IB Diploma program. The date is Friday, January 29, 2021, and the time is 8:30am. The location will be the third floor Lecture Hall, and the meeting will last around one hour. There will be a presentation and time for questions. The meeting will be in English with Mandarin translation. Please look for Mr. Payne’s email for RSVP information. Thank you!

Meet Patricia Chen

After graduating from KAS in 2017, Patricia made her way to New York City to attend her dream school, NYU, where she is currently majoring in Media, Culture, and Communication.

自2017於KAS畢業後，Patricia來到了紐約就讀她夢想中的大學～紐約大學，主修媒體文化傳播。

Patricia has advice for high school students planning for a transition to college in a new country. She says that time management is important because students are expected to keep up with their own deadlines and complete reading in advance. “Universities aren't like high schools where teachers are there to ensure you learn,” she advises. “You'll have to be self-disciplined and take chances when you see them.”

Patricia為那些計畫去另一個國家就讀大學的高中學生提供建議。她說，時間管理是重要的，因為學生被期待能夠遵守自己的截止日期並提前完成閱讀。“大學不像高中一樣有老師確保你有學習，”她建議。“你必須要自律，並且在看到機會來臨時去把握它。”

While at KAS, Patricia earned the IB Diploma and she credits that with helping her learn to manage stress, write essays, and prepare for presentations at NYU. She remembers vividly what Dr. Leigh said to her when she finished her Extended Essay: "It wasn't that hard, was it?" “That advice really enlightened me in a way—if you stop complaining or thinking and stressing about the assignments coming up but instead do it, you'll realize that it really wasn't that hard to complete.”

在KAS期間，Patricia取得了IB文憑，她認為這幫助她學會了控制壓力、撰寫論文並為她在紐約大學的報告做好了準備。她清晰地記得當她完成延伸論文時，Dr. Leigh對她說：“沒有那麼難，對吧？”“這句話在某種程度上啟發了我～如果你停止抱怨或是想著並緊張即將到來的作業，而是去做，你會發現其實真的沒有那麼難完成。”

At NYU, Patricia has had the opportunity to participate in a lot of networking events with media agencies and business corporations and executives from well-renowned companies such as Disney, NBCUniversal, Sony, ViacomCBS, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan, and many more.

在紐約大學裡，Patricia有機會與許多媒體機構和商業公司，如迪士尼，NBC環球，索尼，維亞康姆CBS，摩根史坦利，摩根大通等知名公司一同參與社交活動。

She misses the tight circles at KAS, going to tournaments, and other club activities from her time as a high school student. We are excited to see where her college experience takes Patricia in the future, whether that’s into the world of work or on to graduate school next.

The start of a new year also kicks off a transition when our seniors start receiving results from universities and counselors begin working intensively with juniors who are just starting their college applications. Over the next 2 - 3 months, college counselors will meet individually with each junior to create a college list and prepare their applications. Students are using the software CIALFO to research, track and organize their college applications. We will also be meeting weekly during advisory class with the Class of 2022 throughout the spring semester. We will also have a 3-week unit on college counseling with G10 students this spring.

Occasionally we will share information in the newsletter about best practices in college admission and answering common questions you may have about preparing your child to apply to universities around the world. We invite you to schedule a meeting, call or email, or join us at a parent information session anytime!

Question: Is it necessary for my child to take an English proficiency test like TOEFL or iELTS if they are currently studying at an English-speaking school like KAS?

問：如果我的孩子正就讀如KAS這樣的全美語學校，還需要另外考托福或雅思嗎？

Answer: Most students who are not native English speakers or who have not had at least 3 or 4 years of English language instruction will need an English proficiency test. Universities have different language testing policies so it is very important to check each school’s admissions requirement. UK universities prefer the iELTS test while TOEFL is more common in Canada and the U.S. Many universities offer a waiver of the English proficiency test for students who have an IB Predicted Grade of 5 or higher in their IB English class or who score a 600 or higher on the SAT reading and writing portion of the test. Generally speaking, a TOEFL or iELTS test is a good idea for international students and provides universities with confidence that the student will be successful in an English language university class.

Question: Where can I find information on financial aid, scholarships and calculating the cost of college in the U.S.?

Answer: Understanding your options for financial aid and scholarships can help you make important decisions as you make a list of universities. KAS College Counselors provide workshops each year on this topic for both parents and students. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply for financial aid through FAFSA. International students and U.S. citizens can both apply for financial aid and scholarships by completing the very useful CSS Profile, which is then sent to these participating universities for consideration. College Board also offers detailed information on paying for college. To help calculate the potential cost for a specific university, search the college website for a “Net Price Calculator” (for example, here is NYU’s calculator) where you can enter some quick financial information and get an estimate of aid and cost. It is important to apply by December 1 for the best chance of receiving academic merit scholarships.
