Region of the U.S.
States and Cities
History of the States
Originally, Oklahoma was part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, but it became an official state on November 16, 1907.
Part of Arizona and New Mexico used to be the same land, but they were given to the United States during the Gadsden Purchase around 1853-54. In 1863, Arizona became its own territory, and on February 14, 1912, Arizona became an official state. On January 6, 1912, New Mexico became an official state.
Climate
The climate of the southwest Region is mostly arid. As the southern-most part of the U.S., the temperatures in this area are very high and precipitation is low. There are often droughts and this is an issue that scientists have started noticing. Online, there are several websites about dangerous climate change in the region and it is becoming a concern.
