# Mrs. Schleicher's Schmooze

### Mrs. Schleicher's & Ms. Rosenberg's Newsletter 10/12-10/16

Finally we had a full week of school!! It was exhausting, but full of fun! We learned about the Shema and V'ahavta prayers and made beautiful mezzuzot. We talked about how those prayers are rolled up inside the mezzuzah! I can't wait to hear where your child decided to hang theirs!

## Language Arts

This week in language arts, we read a story called Julius. We looked for elements of reality and fantasy in the story. In grammar, we are working on capitalization rules. We had so much fun playing a main idea travel game! First we brainstormed topics to write about and then wrote a main idea sentence about them. Then, I played music and we danced around the room until the music stopped. Once the music stopped, the students found a seat and wrote a detail to support the topic sentence. We did this a total of 4 times and had so much fun doing it! We discussed what details made sense and others that needed improvement so it was a great experience over all!!

## Math

In math we had fun with money! We learned who was on each coin, the value of the coin, and how to write amounts with dollar sign and decimal points. Then we had lots of practice counting coins! We had fun doing the money rotation game and playing Money Bags in centers. We also watched fun movies on brainpop jr. to learn more about counting with dollars and cents.

## Science

We had an amazing kick off to our new unit on Geology! I hope the kids told you about our mystery package and the suspense that was built up all day to get them excited for our exploration in the "cave" to find rocks! We learned about the layers of the earth, that rocks are made of minerals, and learned about several different types of minerals! If your child has a rock collection or anything else to share that relates to our studies of rocks and minerals, please let them bring it in beginning next week! We will be studying rocks and minerals until we go to our field trip to the Tellus Museum on November 12th! ROCK ON!!

## Hebrew

Learning cursive Hebrew letters is interesting and enjoyable!

We covered four related letters this week: ו(VAV), י (YOD), נ (NUN), and ן (NOON SOFIT- final NUN).

We practiced the correct formation of these letters in writing and our proficiency in reading them.

Here are our verbs this week: נוֹתְנִים (NOTNEEM- giving), קוֹרְאִים (KOREEM- reading).

Looking for a fun Hebrew activity to do at home?

## Thankful Thursday

Yesterday we had our first Thankful Thursday! It was an idea that Ava had in her mayor speech. Each Thursday, a student will choose a name of a teacher or staff member and that student will write a thank you letter to him/her. Then, the whole class will sign it. Ava wrote the letter to Mrs. Pritchett, Mrs. Osborne, and Mrs. Brown.
