Section 2 of PBL for 7th graders
Honor Choir
by Kacey Dumb
The 7th grade honor choir will perform once this year at Niacc on Nov. 13. We will have 6th grade lunch in the chorus room, and head there on two suburbans, and practice with a bunch of different schools, and have dinner, and later have our concert. It's a great experience, the music's high school level and very difficult. I am unsure how many schools are participating. The students participating at this school are; Kaitlyn, Brooke, Kacey, Brenna, Jillian, Julia, Grace, and Cassie.
The Online Bullying
By: Delaney
Bullying has always been a huge problem, and it's starting to be an even bigger issue on the internet. It's so easy as to just comment something so hurtful on the web. This unacceptable torment online is called cyberbullying, and there have been many cases of suicide because of that. 42% of teens get bullied in a year.
Some of the effects of cyberbullying are:
-Bad grades
-Skipping school.
-Use drugs and alcohol.
-Lower self esteem
Some signs of cyberbullying are:
-Being jumpy when getting a message or text.
-Sad after using a phone or computer.
-Keeping away from group activities
-Changes in appetite, sleep, or behavior.
We need to stop being mean on the screen, and it's up to us to stop this taunting. So the next time you text your friend or comment on someone's picture, think about what you're sending.

It Seams Cool To Me
By: Devin
The newest fashion advice for young male teens everywhere. We start our fall look off with a pair of jeans, a leather Jacket and a bright red t-shirt. If you want, most people choose to add a beanie or a flat bill hat. Add a pair of Vans for shoes and a scarf if wanted. I think this look is able to be worn at any time of the year just change the color of the shoes and shirt. That's all for this month on the news fashions trends.Get Into the 21st Century!

Phones:
On September 25th, 2015, the iPhone 6s by Apple was available to buy in stores. The new iPhone comes with the apple update known as iOS 9. Now you might be thinking, What’s so great about the iPhone 6s? The iPhone 6s has a new piece of tech that they call 3D Touch which is basically a 3D looking screen. It also has other things that all of the previous iPhones don’t have. In other companies, Earlier this year, the Samsung Galaxy s6 edge was released. The s6 edge is just like the Samsung Galaxy s5, but the screen reaches onto the sides of the phone.
Gaming:
On October 13, 2015, the new Minecraft game called Minecraft: Story Mode was released onto consoles such as the Playstation, XBOX, and the iPad. The game is just like the original Minecraft, but it’s in story mode. In my opinion, it looks really cool! You can go to a store near you and get the season pass for $30. I’m thinking it’s like an interactive tv show series. Another new game to the gaming world is the epic finale to the Arkham series: Batman: Arkham Knight. To read more about Arkham Knight, scroll down to my other article called “Bombarding Batman.” The last game that I’ll be talking about is called Star Wars: Battlefront. This game is an online multiplayer shooter game based on the Star Wars movie series. The new game will be released in Mid-November. I expect this game to be extremely popular considering that the Beta version had 9 million players!
Cool Tech:
Currently, engineers at Texas A&M University are testing and creating a new device that people can put on their arm. The point of this device is for people who can’t speak to do sign. It senses the sign, and interprets it into English so people with speech disabilities and people who can verbally speak can communicate. Unfortunately, this piece of equipment isn’t available to buy yet. Finally, the last thing I’ll be talking about: Google Cars! They’re not out yet, but they are being made and tested by, you guessed it: Google. The car will be released in a few years due to safety laws, but when it does come out, it will be epic! So, you might be thinking “What are google cars?” These new cars are going to be driverless or self driving, so the driver doesn’t have to worry about driving! Honestly, I can’t wait to get one some day! Now you know more about the technology around us and what there is to come!

The Hidden Nutrient
By Carson
Carbs. Everyone has heard the word, but do you actually understand what the object behind the word is? Carbohydrates are macronutrients, along with fats and proteins. Other nutrients such as Vitamin K, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Iron, and Manganese are micronutrients. Carbohydrates are all the same nutrient, but some are more key than others. Carbs from starches such as potatoes, bread, and noodles take longer to give you energy, but the energy lasts longer. these are known as good carbs. Carbs from cookies, cake, marshmallows, and other sugary foods activate right away but do not last as long and have very unhealthy quantities of the macronutrients carbs and fat. These are called bad carbs. This can lead to obesity and a bad diet. Carbs are essential to our lives because they give us the energy we thrive on, but they can also be evil when consumed in mass amounts. So, remember to watch what you eat!

Wonders of Water
By: Duchovny
In 2016, there will be 1,400 swimmers competing in the Olympics for the US. In April of 2013, the United States committee announced that Omaha, Neb has been selected to host the 2016, U.S. Olympic team trials for swimming. The event starts on June 26 and ends on July 3. They do this for our country and to try and win the gold medal and the 25,000 dollars. There are tons of different swimming techniques like: the backstroke, the crawl, the breaststroke, and the butterfly. Those are the four main swimming techniques you use in the olympics.
Breaststroke: arms move forward from breast at the surface of the water. Then kick your legs in a frog like motion and you have to touch the wall with both hands at the same time. Crawl: the kicking act of the legs and your arms alternate over head into the water. Backstroke: stay on your back and arms are in an over head motion and legs are fluttering. Butterfly: an overhead arm motion with a dolphin kick at the same time. There are races for each stroke and each one is easier or more difficult depending on the person. Be sure to watch the olympic trials in 2016.Mrs. Barillas

The Red Hot Chili Peppers Through the Ages
By Eli
In 1983 The Red Hot Chili Peppers were formed In LA by Lead Singer Anthony Kiedis, Guitarist Hillel Slovak, Bassist Flea, and Drummer Jack Irons. But Hillel Slovak and Jack Irons were already committed to another band even after getting a big record label and performing a lot in LA. In 1988 anyway Hillel Slovak died of Drug addiction With Anthony Kiedis still addicted to drugs the band decided to move on with Jack Irons Quitting. All the band had left was anthony Kiedis and bassist Flea the two of them were debating to move on or keep making music but they decided to keep doing what Slovak helped make. After Irons Quitting and Slovaks death they started looking for new band members. They found their new Drummer D.H Peligro and new Guitarist Dewayne Mcknight. Soon after the hiring of Mcknight and Peligros Anthony Kiedis left the band to enter rehab for his drug problem. When Kiedis resumed his career with the band Mcknight was fired for not being fit enough for the band. A year later Peligro quit the band and the band had to look for yet another Drummer. In live auditions for a Drummer the band found Chad Smith who is still the drummer to this day.

The Best Corner in the Game
by Sam
Ty Law is by far one of the best corners in the game. This 5’ 11” cornerback from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, has over 700 career tackles and five quarterback sacks, out of the 53 interceptions that he has he brought seven back for six points each. Ty Law has visited five Pro Bowls and four Super Bowl (1996, 2001, 2003, and 2004) but only won three of them (lost in 1996). He played on the Patriots for nine years, starting in 1995 he played until 2004 for the Patriots, after this he played for five more years in the NFL (at the Chiefs, Jets, and the Broncos) then he retired in 2009. Some might debate that his number should be retired, but we have seen other cornerbacks wear this number including Darrelle Revis (also from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania) in 2014, Michael Stone in 2005, and Kyle Arrington in 2011-2012, the safeties who wore this were: Mel Mitchell in 2007, Jonathan Wilhite 2008 through 2010, and Adrian Wilson in 2013. All in all, Ty Law has probably had the most successful career for cornerbacks in the NFL.
Government
By: Caden
Obama! He is our president. Do you like him? I don’t. I think he is a terrible president! That is just my opinion though. What's yours? I will be telling you about government in this story. Government is pretty much what controls the USA. They tell us what the laws are and how to follow them. If we don't follow those laws we get punished by going to jail or just doing community servic etc. If you kill someone then you could get sentenced to jail for life. If you kill multiple people you will be killed. Our government follows the Constitution which shows all these rules the government have to follow. That is our government and laws. Hope you learned something about the government in this story.

Fall is here, trees are turning bright, vivid colors, the temperature is turning cold, jackets and hats are coming out. It’s a sign to…. BAKE! There are many amazing treats that are easy and delicious! Below are some of my favorite, trending fall recipes.
Pumpkin Chocolate Cookies
Ingredients
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup white sugar
1 cup light brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup canned pumpkin puree
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
2 cups (12-ounce bag) milk chocolate chips, not semi sweet
Nonstick cooking spray or parchment paper
Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray cookie sheets with nonstick spray or line them with parchment paper.
Directions
Using a mixer, beat the butter until smooth. Beat in the white and brown sugars, a little at a time, until the mixture is light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs 1 at a time, then mix in the vanilla and pumpkin puree. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves. Slowly beat the flour mixture into the batter in thirds. Stir in the chips. Scoop the cookie dough by heaping tablespoons onto the prepared cookie sheets and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cookies are browned around the edges. Remove the cookie sheets from the oven and let them rest for 2 minutes. Take the cookies off with a spatula and cool them on wire racks.
Dianne's Pumpkin Cookie Cups
makes approx. 32 cookies
Ingredients
Cookie Cups:
2 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
2 Tablespoons milk
Pumpkin Filling:
3 oz. cream cheese, softened
1/3 cup pumpkin puree
3 3/4 cup confectioners' sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
pinch ground cloves
Optional decoration:
ground cinnamon or chopped nuts
Directions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lightly grease mini-muffin pan(s).
Sift together the flour, baking powder, nutmeg (optional) and salt in a medium bowl.
In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar with an electric mixer until creamy. Add egg and milk and mix until combined. With mixer running on low, slowly add the flour mixture. Mix until dough comes together.
Roll dough into 1 Tablespoon-size balls and place a ball into each cup of muffin tin. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, just until edges start to turn a golden-brown. Remove from oven and let sit 1 minute. Using the back of a rounded teaspoon measure, press a well into each cookie. Let cookies cool in pan for 5 minutes before removing to cooling rack. It helps to give the cookies a little twist as you lift them out. Cool completely.
To make the filling, mix the cream cheese and 1 cup of the confectioners' sugar with an electric mixer until smooth. Slowly add the pumpkin and mix until smooth. Continue mixing while adding the remaining confectioners' sugar. Mix in the cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves. Spoon or decoratively pipe the pumpkin mixture into each cookie cup. Sprinkle with additional cinnamon or chopped nuts for decoration if desired.

Hockey
By: Ashley
Hockey is a fun sport. It is fun and active. the sport is on ice so it a winter sport. the hole goal of the game is to get the puck in our competition net. in the game you can not backslash you can only have 7 players on the ice, if a player can’t serve his penalty one of his teammates most, if your stick is broke you can’t play the puck, the goalie can’t handle the puck outs, a regular season if the score is still tied after overtime it is followed by a shootout, a team that loses in overtime is awarded a single point. The Injury That Shook The USA
By:Caden
Do you know what happened to Kevin Ware? Well, during a March Madness Tournament in 2013, Kevin Ware went up to block a shot against the Duke Blue Devils. When he landed, he landed awkwardly on his right leg and broke his shin bone right out of his skin! It was pretty horrific. He was rushed to the hospital. He had emergency surgery on his right leg.
He was out the rest of the season and part of the next. His first game back was against Pikeville on November 6, 2013. When he returned it was a moment the USA and I will never forget. We will never forget this injury because it was a very tragic and gruesome injury.
The link for his return and first basket is below.

The first Grand theft auto came out in 1997 by Rockstar Games. Rockstar Games made Grand Theft Auto in a parallel universe like ours. for example San Andreas is in San francisco. There are other cities in other games of Grand Theft Auto like Vice City in Grand Theft Auto III, Vinewood in Grand Theft Auto V and Los Santos in Grand Theft Auto V. Here is a chart of cities in the game and there real life name.
San Fierro= San Francisco
Vice City = Miami
Los Santos = Los Angeles
Vinewood = Hollywood
Las Venturas = Las Vegas
All those Cities are in the state of San Andreas. In Grand Theft Auto, you can steal cars, cause the cops to come on you, and wreck town property. You can also fly helicopters and planes, drive cars by houses and go into shops in town. In Grand Theft Auto you can pick free roam which then you can do anything you want in San Andreas and you can also play in campaign mode where you do missions and lead a crime organization.
The Moon's Link With Earth?
By Gretchen
Have you wondered about the link between the Earth and the moon? Researchers have recently discovered that this link is closer than we ever knew. Scientist now know that Earth's gravitational pull is opening faults on the moon. In 2009 NASA launched the LRO. ( Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter ) High-resolution photos showed lots of faults and cliffs in the moon's surface. The cause they found was Earth's gravity. The moon's gravity causes bodies of water to rise and fall in tides. The Earth has the same effect on the moon's surface.
There are around 3,200 of these faults. They are the most common features on the moon. They're dozens of yards high and less than 6 miles long. I think that this new info makes sense. I really didn't think about it before. They found that they're less than 50 million years old and are probably still forming. They don't know everything about these faults but, scientists will keep studying this topic.

Halloween Dance
On the scary night before Halloween, October 30th, from 6:30pm-9:00pm all the ghosts, ghouls, and mummies too, are invited to dance with, or run from, the zombies at the Halloween Dance. Well, only 7th and 8th grade ghosts, ghouls, and mummies. Sorry 6th grade, there'll be something else for you. You will find us in the commons or the gym. It is decided you can come as your true monster, or just some regular, old costume. There will be food, I promise no brains. The admission is the small amount of $3, and if there happens to be a profit, it will be donated to a charity. The charity is unknown. I hope I, your friendly goblin, will find you at the Halloween Dance!
Acoustic & Electric
By: Brooke
Acoustic, Electric lead, Electric-Acoustic, Twelve-String, Archtop, Steel, Resonator, Bass, Double-Neck... sound familiar? They’re all different types of guitars!! Most of you probably already know what an acoustic, electric guitar, and a bass is, but did you know that there are more guitars than those? There are about nine different types of guitars. Most people have never heard of the Archtop, Steel, and the Resonator guitars. An archtop guitar is a steel-stringed acoustic or semi-acoustic guitar with a full body and a distinctive arched top, whose sound is particularly popular with jazz players. Steel guitar is a type of guitar or the method of playing the instrument. Developed in Hawaii in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a steel guitar is usually positioned horizontally; strings are plucked with one hand, while the other hand changes the pitch of one or more strings with the use of a bar or slide called a steel (generally made of metal, but also of glass or other materials).
A resonator guitar or resophonic guitar is an acoustic guitar that produces sound by carrying string vibration through the bridge to one or more spun metal cones (resonators), instead of to the soundboard (guitar top). Resonator guitars were originally designed to be louder than regular acoustic guitars, which were overwhelmed by horns and percussion instruments in dance orchestras. The guitar was developed and used across Europe, beginning in the 12th century and later, in the Americas. Guitar manufacturing is the use of machines, tools, and labor in the production of electric and acoustic guitars. This phrase may be in reference to handcrafting guitars using traditional methods or assembly line production in large quantities using modern methods.
Guitar manufacturing can also be broken into several categories such as body manufacturing and neck manufacturing. Guitar manufacturing includes the production of alto, classical, tenor, and bass tuned guitars, with classical being the most widely used tuning. A single person professionally trained in guitar manufacturing is called a Luthier, although luthiers typically create other stringed musical instruments as well. For a list of large scale guitar manufacturing companies, see this list of guitar manufacturers.

Cross Country
By Austin
The Clear Lake Middle School Cross Country team ventured to Algona for a big meet on Monday, 09/28/15. With 13 teams participating in the Junior High race, there were over 130 runners in each of the races. Many of the young Lion runners ran their best times of the year on the 2 mile course.
8th grader Riley Cooney once again led the girls team to the finish line as she earned a 14th place ribbon with her time of 14:19. 7th grader Jillian Enke was the next Lion to finish as she came across the line in a time of 15:29 in 45th place. A pack of Lions came ran together much of the way and finished close together; Kacey Zickefoose, 18:07, Kara Branstad, 18:08, and Courtney Doughan, 18:21. They were followed closely by Rylee Smith, running her first Cross country race, who finished in 18:53. Riley Schuchard and Gretchen Guetzlaff both improved their times by more than two minutes as they finished in 20:08 and 21:07 respectively.
Jacob Pedelty had the fastest time of the day for all the Lions. He broke the 14 minute barrier for the first time as he ran a time of 13:54, placing him 38th overall in the boys race. 7th graders Sam Nelson and Justin Wright ran together and had negative splits, running the second half of the race faster than the first. Nelson finished in 44th place with a time of 14:05 and Wright, 46th place in 14:17. Theo Swanson was close behind in a time of 15:02 followed by Seth Froiland in 15:50 and Ashton Eckenrod in 15:57. Tim Swanson was next in 16:22 and the parade of Lions continued with Noah Christensen, 16:51, Isaiah Smith, 17:07, Elijah Eldridge, 17:58, Cameron Dugan, 18:54, Alex Gabrielson, 20:50, Garratt Paul, 21:40, and Austin Jager, 25:54.
With the weather finally turning a little cooler we look forward to improving our times even more in the upcoming races. Information provided by coach Tim Fyfe.
Should College Sports get paid?
By: Zoe
The NBA and WNBA are professional sports. How much do you think they get paid, $25,000, $250,000? Try $25,000,000, that's a lot of money! That kind of money is only for professionals, but what about the college players? Should they get paid? I think they shouldn’t because they go to college to learn, so why pay them to learn every day. Yes, NCAA does make a lot of money, but they could put that towards make their gyms, better gear, and much more. Below are some of my classmates’ thoughts on whether or not college players should get paid.
Yes: Yes they should. Colleges are making millions of dollars off of the college athletes, the least they could do is pay the students for their time. Even if they just pay the players out of the proceeds from their sport. Not all college players are attending on a college scholarship. They are having to keep up with their grades, practice and game schedules, and work to pay their college fees.
-Miz. D
No: Most college students pay to go to school. College athletes already get scholarships for up to free college, plus some schools have less money than others so better players might get paid less. -Sam
No: College may be about the sports to most, but college is not the NFL. College is a school and you go to school to learn. If you are getting paid to do something you need later anyway, it sounds pretty funny. -Carson
No: I don't think they should be paid because they pay to get into college. Why would you get paid for something you pay for? - Caden
Yes: They work hard and stuff, but really it doesn't make sense to me that they would get paid for learning things that people teach them.
No: I think they should not get payed because I think they should just get in to school for free. -Ashley
Yes: I think they should get payed because they work really hard at what they do and they could get injured and they might be able to have a job because of this sport, so they might not be able to pay their hospital bill. - Duchovny
This discussion can go on and on forever and ever but my conclusion is that college students should not get paid.
A List of Wrestling Moves (and a basic description):
-Sam
Here is a list of wrestling moves that may come in handy in case of you being caught in a sticky situation, or if you want to wrestle.
Double Leg Takedown
when you take someone down by grabbing their two legs (basically the first move you learn)(takedowns give you 2 points)
Single Leg Takedown
when you take someone down by grabbing one of their legs (probably the easiest wrestling move to do)
Same-Arm Same-Leg
when you step into take someone down with one leg and you grab their leg with the same side arm
Arm Drag
a set up for a single leg takedown; when you grab your opponent's arm with your same arm and you drag it across to open his leg up (a very effective move to get a takedown, but sometimes hard to get)
Headlock
when you take one of your opponent's arms and their head and lock them up in a circle you make with your arms (very effective for giving you points)
Stand-Up
from down/referee's position to standing (gives you 1 point)
Two on One
two hands on their one arm
Cradle
when you lock their leg and head in your arms (similar to head lock)
Half Nelson
when you’re lying on the opponent and you slip your arm under their arm and over their head to turn them over (probably one of the most effective beginner moves for winning)
Wrestling is one of the hardest sports ever created, therefore one of the most fun.

The Weather of the Month: Hurricane
By Carson
Now before we get into the weather of the month, the hurricane, let’s give you some background knowledge about the category of storm. A tropical storm is created when wind speeds reach 39 mph, but a hurricane is formed when 74 mph winds are reached whilst rotating over the ocean. There are five stages of a hurricane, Category #1s are between 74 and 96 mph winds. A category #5 is 157 mph or higher. This brings us to our super-storm for the month of October.
Hurricane Joaquin started in the Caribbean Sea and plowed its way through the Bahamas on Sept. 30 as a Cat. #1 and created havoc. On it’s path to America, the hurricane increased to a Cat. #2 and the east coast became a hectic chaotic zone of sandbags and wood walls. Joaquin became a Cat. #4, and reached wind speeds up to 155 mph, right before the storm hit the American coast. To make matters worse there was also catastrophic flooding, so many meteorologists thought the same that happened with Isabella in 2003 would happen with Joaquin.
Joaquin eventually spun out of its predicted path and headed towards Bermuda and finally disappeared. This storm reminded the coast that they must always be prepared, and never let their guard down.

Amari Cooper: Life as a Raider
By: Alec
Amari was born June 17, 1994 in Miami, Florida. When he got older he attended Northwestern Miami High school. He attended Alabama’s summer camp where he was offered a position to come play football at the Alabama Crimson Tide. His stats for his college career are below.
The Oakland Raiders chose Cooper for the 4th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Cooper was originally assigned the jersey number 19, but following the release of another receiver James Jones, he switched to his current number, 89. Cooper made his first appearance in the NFL for the Oakland Raiders on September 13, 2015. He grabbed 5 receptions for 47 yards in a 33-13 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. In his second game against the Baltimore Ravens, he connected with Derek Carr for a 68 yard touchdown, the first of his career. Cooper also had 109 yards receiving and helped the Raiders win 37-33. Following up after his week two breakout, he provided the Raiders with eight receptions for 134 yards in a 27-20 win against the Cleveland Browns. He is the first Raiders receiver with back to back 100 yards receiving games since Randy Moss in 2005. Through three games, he is third in NFL history for receiving yards by a rookie with 290 receiving yards.
Pumpkin Rolls
By: Delaney
Fall is here, and that means it’s the time when you walk outside in the warm air and feel the nice cool breeze sneak upon your face. The time when everybody has pumpkins sitting out on their decks, the scary decorations hidden around the house, and my favorite part is the scrumptious food! One of my personal favorite desserts are mouthwatering pumpkin rolls, or the out of this world cranberry-pumpkin cookies, and you can't forget about the savory apple-berry pie or that juicy turkey. Today I'm going to share with you my four favorite fall recipes!
Pumpkin Roll
Ingredients
3 eggs, beaten
1 cup white sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2/3 cup pumpkin puree
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons butter
softened 8 ounces cream cheese
1 cup confectioners sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract confectioners
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Butter or grease a 10x15 inch jelly roll pan.
In a mixing bowl, blend together the eggs, sugar, cinnamon, and pumpkin. In a separate bowl, mix together flour and baking soda. Add to pumpkin mixture and blend until smooth. Evenly spread the mixture over the prepared jelly roll pan.
Bake 15 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven. Remove from oven and allow to cool enough to handle.
Remove cake from pan and place on tea towel (cotton, not terry cloth). Roll up the cake by rolling a towel inside cake and place seam side down to cool.
Prepare the frosting by blending together the butter, cream cheese, confectioners sugar, and vanilla.
When cake is completely cooled, unroll and spread with cream cheese filling. Roll up again without towel. Wrap with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to serve. Sprinkle top with confectioners sugar and slice into 8-10 servings.
Cranberry-Pumpkin Cookies
Ingredients
1 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 egg
1 cup solid pack pumpkin puree
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup fresh cranberries
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon orange zest
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.
In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in vanilla, egg and pumpkin. Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon; stir into mixture until well blended. Cut the cranberries in half and stir into mixture along with the orange zest and walnuts. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheets.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes.
Apple-berry Pie
Ingredients
1 pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie
1 cup white sugar
4 teaspoons tapioca
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups fresh blackberries
2 cups apples - peeled, cored and sliced
2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). On a lightly floured surface, roll out one crust, and place in a 9 inch pie plate. Roll out top crust, and set aside.
In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, tapioca, and cinnamon. Add blackberries and apple slices. Toss gently to coat without mashing the berries. Let stand for 20 minutes.
Spoon filling into pastry lined pan. Dot with butter. Moisten the edge of the pastry with water. Cover with top crust; trim and crimp edge. Cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape during baking. Cover edge with foil to prevent over-browning.
Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove foil, and continue baking for 20 to 25 minutes, or until crust is golden brown. Cool on wire rack.
Rosemary Roasted Turkey
Ingredients
3/4 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons minced garlic
2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon ground black pepper salt to taste
1 (12 pound) whole turkey
Directions
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, garlic, rosemary, basil, Italian seasoning, black pepper and salt. Set aside.
Wash the turkey inside and out; pat dry. Remove any large fat deposits. Loosen the skin from the breast. This is done by slowly working your fingers between the breast and the skin. Work it loose to the end of the drumstick, being careful not to tear the skin.
Using your hand, spread a generous amount of the rosemary mixture under the breast skin and down the thigh and leg. Rub the remainder of the rosemary mixture over the outside of the breast. Use toothpicks to seal skin over any exposed breast meat.
Place the turkey on a rack in a roasting pan. Add about 1/4 inch of water to the bottom of the pan. Roast in the preheated oven 3 to 4 hours, or until the internal temperature of the bird reaches 180 degrees F (80 degrees C).

Bombarding Batman
By: Gavin
Have you ever played or watched game play of the Batman: Arkham Knight? Have you even heard of it? If not, keep reading!
WARNING: SPOILER ALERTS!!!
Batman: Arkham Knight is the 4th and final game of the Arkham series which is set in the fictional town known as Gotham City. The game was released to the public on June 23, 2015 for many platforms. This is my summary of the game. On halloween, the criminal known as Scarecrow threatens the city of Gotham by saying he’ll unleash his fear toxin the next day to make everyone hallucinate, see their worst fears, and potentially kills them. A lot of the Gotham residents then evacuate the city. Batman then tracks Scarecrow down and eventually saves Poison Ivy who was imprisoned in Scarecrow’s hideout. From there he talks to his ally known as Oracle, who tracks the fear toxin to a company known as Ace Chemicals. He searches the building which was heavily guarded by the criminal Arkham Knight and his goons. He fights them and gets past them. Batman eventually finds where the toxin is, and finds out that Scarecrow is using Ace Chemicals for a toxin bomb. He decreases the explosion range, although the toxin started leaking, and he was affected, and hallucinates seeing Joker holding a gun to Batman’s head. Before he decreases the range, Scarecrow explains that he captured Oracle.
Batman manages to escape and meets with Police Commissioner Gordon who is Oracle’s adoptive father, and tells him the bad news. After that, Batman finds out that Scarecrow hired a man named Simon Stagg to build a device for the gas called Cloudburst. Batman interrogates Simon and then confronts Scarecrow. Unfortunately, a little bit of the toxin reaches Batman and allows Joker to temporarily control Batman while the Arkham Knight removes the Cloudburst. While he recovers, Batman finds Oracle locked in a cell at Scarecrow’s base. When he finds her though, she was already affected by the fear gas and due to Batman’s hallucination, she appears to commit suicide. Later, the Arkham Knight starts the Cloudburst which flooded Gotham City with the toxin, but Batman destroyed it. He then convinces Poison Ivy to use her powers to empower a tree to get rid of the toxin throughout the city. After doing so, Poison Ivy dies and the gas allows Joker to further control Batman’s mind.
Batman follows the Arkham Knight to an abandoned construction site where the Arkham Knight reveals that he is Jason Todd, who is the old Robin. In the past, he was kidnapped and tortured by Joker. Jason blames Batman for abandoning him, and even though Batman offers help, Todd runs away. After that, Batman and Jim Gordon confront Scarecrow on the rooftops where Oracle is found to be alive. Batman saves her while Scarecrow kidnaps Jim, and using his goons, he torments the GCPD (Gotham City Police Dept.) Batman and Oracle follow the goons and take them out, but they were a distraction, and Scarecrow kidnaps Batman’s sidekick, Robin. After Robin and Jim Gordon got kidnapped, Batman surrenders to Scarecrow to save his allies. From there, Batman is taken to Arkham Asylum. When they arrive, Scarecrow repeatedly injects Batman and then reveals to the world that Batman is Bruce Wayne. While doing so, Joker and Batman are battling inside Bruce’s mind for control. Batman wins, and Bruce puts Joker in the back of his mind to be forgotten, which is Joker’s fear.
The Arkham Knight finds Batman and saves him. Batman then attacks Scarecrow with his own fear toxin. Finally, Gotham is safe and Gordon orders the officers to reclaim the streets. Batman then returns to his house, which is surrounded by reporters. His butler, Alfred, greets him at the door. The two enter the home where it then explodes, killing them both. A while after, Jim Gordon becomes the Mayor of Gotham City, and attends Oracle and Robin’s wedding. Somewhere else, some thugs attack a family in an alleyway, much like what happened to Bruce and his family. The thugs are confronted by a nightmarish looking Batman and the game ends. So that is my summary on the epic finale of the Arkham series: Batman: Arkham Knight!

Where 2 Go
By Eli
The University of Iowa is in Iowa City. Iowa, the university, was established in 1847 right after Iowa was accepted into the union. Iowa’s campus spans 1,700 acres along the Iowa river. At the University of Iowa they have 500+ student organizations, and $1,000,000,000+ in academics, research, arts and athletics. They also have 7,000+ trees on campus with even more plants! After all the classes, they have concerts, fund raisers, an inflatable obstacle course, movies, and other things around the campus and around Iowa City. The principal of The University of Iowa is Bruce Harold. Bruce Harold has been president of The University of Iowa for eight years and counting. My opinion of The University of Iowa is somewhere I wouldn't go because the campus is too big and I would go somewhere where it was quite and big, but not to big.

By: Zoe
ISIS, it’s kind of a scary word. You turn on the news and you see ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) , you see video clips of the bombing, beheadings, killings and see people running for their lives. When I see these videos I think where did ISIS come from? Why is there even a war over there? Who even is Isis?
Al Qaeda was a group before ISIS, they were in charge of 9/11
Al Qaeda was in Iraq when U.S invaded
Al Qaeda is an international terrorist group that was dedicated to stopping non- Islamic governments with force and violence.
Al Qaeda was weakened in 2007 as a result of the Sunni Awakening.
Al Qaeda saw the opportunity to regain power in the Syrian conflict in 2011, by moving into Syria from Iraq.
2013 Al-Baghdadi has spread his group's influence by moving back into Iraq and changing the group's name to ISIS.
ISIS didn’t have its first defeat until mid- August in 2014 when Kurdish and Iraq forces, supported by aggressive U.S aerial bombing campaign.
ISIS is in a war with anyone that doesn’t believe in Islamic beliefs
So, a lot of problems going on in that region a lot of bombings, beheadings, killings, kidnappings, and many more scary things going on over there. But now when you see ISIS on the news or you hear people talking about it you can have more background knowledge about who they are and where they came from.

Elections: What are they?
by: Gavin
“What are presidential elections?” You might ask. In the U.S, every 4 years, the presidential elections are held for people 18 years or older to vote in their local voting district. In my opinion, I think kids about 14 or older should be able to vote. People use a sheet of paper or an electronic to vote on who they want as president based on the debate which is showed on TV a year before the elections are held. I think that's a good idea to show it on TV so a lot of people can watch and not do as much research. The debate is where all of the candidates are brought together in front of a crowd to announce what they’ll do for America if they get elected. Fun Fact: The current president can get elected for 2 terms which are each 4 years. Once you are done with your vote, it is sent to a place to count the votes. When they are done with counting the votes, the new president for the next 4 years is announced. And that is my explanation of what the elections and voting processes are!

The new teacher, Mrs. Huffman, is our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade music teacher in Clear Lake, Iowa. She is an educational coordinator. An education coordinator is a person who gives lessons about music history, this includes the Surf Ballroom. She has been doing this for 6 weeks. She went to college for 4 years and she attended Southern Missouri State University. She grew up in Joplin, Missouri. She chose this job because she loves music and kids. I think she has an amazing singing voice. Her favorite color is blue, and she doesn't work anywhere else. She lives in Clear Lake.

Mars, the Martian Planet
By: Cade and Carson
Mars, the Martian Planet, is the fourth planet in the solar system. Mars was discovered by Christian Huygens in 1659. If I could name this planet I would call it the Martian Planet. This planet was named after the god of war, Ares. It is a known fact that this barren wasteland planet’s surface is red, and it is the only red planet in our Solar System. The materials that are on Mars’ surface are rock, rubble, and iron (which gives it the red color). The radius of Mars is 2,106 miles and the surface area is 55.91 million miles! The gravity on the Martian Planet is 3.711 m/s2 compared to Earth’s 9.807 m/s2 so get ready to jump! The only reason that we would be able to jump is because there is low gravity. People expect to be on Mars in 2040 , so I hope you’ve learned a little something about Mars because we will be there in the future.
The Incredible Edible Pineapple
By: Sofia
What is the secret to the Universe? How were the pyramids built? These questions pale in comparison to the real question; which fruit is better, the pineapple or the watermelon? The answer is clear, the pineapple wins, hands down.
The delicious pineapple was first discovered in 1493 in the Caribbean. This luscious fruit was coveted by the early Americans. Home owners would prove their worth in society by having a pineapple in the center of their tables at dinner parties. Fresh pineapple was a true symbol of prestige and social class in early America.
Even now, the pineapple is second only to the banana as America’s favorite tropical fruit, and in health conscious America, it is no wonder that the Pineapple is still loved.
Vitamin C 105% Primary antioxidant
Manganese 77%
Copper 20%
Vitamin B6 11%
Vitamin B1 11%
Not only is pineapple delicious and packed full of healthy vitamins, it is also high in Bromelain, which is used to control inflammation and coagulation in the blood. Scientists are still astounded at the many uses of this amazing fruit.
Watermelon is great and all, but it does not compare to pineapple in taste, nutrients, or even social status.
Watermelon
By Elijah
I think watermelon is the best fruit because it tastes addictively good. It has a bunch of health benefits, so that's good, too. For instance, watermelon has more lycopene in it than fresh tomatoes. Lycopene is a red pigment that is very good for your cardiovascular system. Watermelon rinds are actually very healthy, as they have lots of lycopene and 1.5 times as many nutrients as the flesh. And furthermore, you could even stay hydrated on watermelon for quite a while too! The citrulline in watermelon can reducе fat cells, and are good for your kidneys as well. Lastly, watermelon can help your immune system IMMENSELY. It has many vitamins that also speed up healing wounds.

Investing the World
By:Devin and Delaney
Stocks are one of the most popular financial instruments in the world, but what does investing into a stock actually mean? Why should we invest into a stock? When should we invest into a stock? So many questions come along when thinking about investing into a stock. Keep reading and you will learn what, when, where, and why you should invest into a stock
To invest in a stock means to take ownership in a company or business. Businesses sell stocks to promote and help earn more cash for the company. For example in the 1960's the Vaseline company wanted people to buy their stocks to promote the company. Today the Vaseline company is a very big company thanks to stocks.
If you were given $100,000 today, how would you spend your money? Most would say cars, or a home, but what about a stock? If you are interested in investing into a stock, new businesses are a great place to start so that your ownership can grow. If you've had a stock for a long time, that means your ownership in the company has grown and you can sell the stock for more money than what you paid for it.Good luck with investing in a stock!

World Gone Wrong?
By: Gretchen and Gavin
Have you ever read The Hunger Games? Do you wonder what happened? If you haven’t, keep reading! The main characters are named Katniss and Peeta, who are two teenagers in a future dystopian USA. In the book, the US is split into 12 districts with distinct characteristics. District one’s characteristic: luxury items, two: masonry, three: technology, four: fishing, five: power, six: transportation, seven: lumber, eight: textiles, nine: grain, ten: livestock, eleven: agriculture, and twelve: mining. The Hunger Games are is an annual event where when the Capital forces all twelve through eighteen year olds in the districts to enter their names into a bowl where they choose one boy and girl from each district to fight to the death for the Capital’s entertainment. They did this because during the event known as the"Dark Days,” the districts rebelled against The Capitol and so the Capital needed to show that the districts were under their control.
Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen volunteers for her sister, who has been called from the bowl, and enters the Hunger Games with Peeta Mellark, the boy who helped her Katniss when she was starving. She thinks he is trying to kill her until, during the interview, he confesses that he loves her, soon after they enter the games. Do you love sci-fi and/or romance? If so this book is for you!
Heart Attack: Panic In The Chest
By: Alec
Do you know how a heart attack happens or how it can be prevented? A heart attack is where plaque (which is made up of cholesterol) builds up in your arteries and the heart cannot pump blood. The heart works itself so hard it causes stress on the hearts and a lot of pain and finally shuts down. Heart attacks usually happen in men and women age 45 and over. Some of the first heart attacks happened in Egypt around 1203 BC, but no one knew what this was. William Harvey, a physician for King Charles I, found out what causes a heart attack in the late 1500's or early 1600’s. Some ways to prevent a heart attack are don’t smoke, be active, and try to be happy. If you are around someone who is having a heart attack call 911, and the doctor will use a defibrillator to shock the heart into working.

There are always new students every year here at Clear Lake, but have you thought about meeting one? The other day I met with Eli Eldridge, and he answered a few of my questions. I first asked him what he likes about Clear lake and he answered, “Well, it is better than Forest City.”
“Why?” I asked.
“The kids in Forest City were just jerks.” he replied. I then asked him how this school is better or worse than his old one. “I like CLMS better than Forest City because people respect you.” He said he moved because he was bullied. I then asked him if he wanted to change anything in our school and he replied, “I’d add more stalls to the bathroom and make them bigger.” I sort of agree with him because that would be really great awesome. He also told me he is an only child, and he likes the Colts. That is a little more about a new student in our school, so go out there and meet someone new.

Claude Monet in a Nutshell
By Gretchen
Claude Monet was one of the well known faces behind French impressionist art, but how much do you really know about this brilliant artist? Monet was born in 1840. Impressionist art was started because, in Monet's time, people were painting people or famous events. Monet liked to paint the outdoors and that was not accepted in his time. ( His work was not appreciated until after he died in 1926.) Monet kept on painting in his unusual style using much larger brush strokes unlike other artists in his time. www.Wikipedia.org
Oscar-Claude Monet was born on November 14th, 1840 in Paris, France. His family moved to Le Havre, France. When Monet was a teenager he went to Paris to pursue his love of art at an art school taught by Charles Gleyre. In 1870 war broke out in France, so Claude moved to England. A few years later, he moved back to France and met his wife, Camille. He made many paintings of her until, in 1879, she died of cancer. He was re-married Alice, who died in 1911. At the end of his career (and life) Monet started to go blind. Though he could not see, in my opinion, that was when he made some of his very best works, such as Water Lilies, my favorite painting. Some of his other works throughout his life are The Rose Walk, Women in the Garden, Grainstacks, and, Poplars. In 1926 Monet died of lung cancer.

Ask Ann
By: Ann {Kacey & Brooke}
My name is Ann and what I'm doing is all anonymous. If you have questions or just need the advice of another person, me, than just leave an anonymous name and your question and I will answer them within the week. Please keep the questions appropriate and mature. Here are a few...
Hi Ann my name is Taryn and I was wondering why there are bullies in this world?
Hi Taryn, I wonder that too all the time. To be honest our world is messed up and I always like to assume the best in people, if someone is bullying you talk to an adult. Remember to stand up for you and anyone else you see or know is getting bullied. A bully might have a hard time at home or just be mean to you because it makes them feel better about themselves. A bully is still a person so be nice to them, because you never know what they are going through. Thank You!
Hi Ann my name is Paula and I was wondering how many people move here each year? Everyone seems to be born and raised here but that can't be right.
Hi Paula, I'm not quite sure. I do know our population. There are 3,651 Males and 4,041 Females. There is a total of around 7,692 people in Clear Lake IA, but that's probably multiplying by the month. I hope that was helpful. Thank You!
Hi Ann my name Billy, I was wondering if I want to be a billionaire car designer where do I go to college?
Hi Billy, so you're thinking of going to a car designing college. I have a few favorite colleges that would be best for that career. Here they are;
1. University of Michigan
2. Michigan State University
3. Michigan Technological University
4. Cornell
I hope this helps you very much for future decision making. Thank You!
Hi Ann my name is Max,I was wondering if you play any sports? If so what is your favorite?
Hi Max, I assume you are a sporty dude. I am sort of sporty. I actually run cross country. In fact CX is my life. I will be in Track and field once the season comes around. I was in dance for 10 years of my life, but not anymore, I also enjoy softball a lot. Thank You!
Hi Ann my name is Paisley what type of hairstyle would work best for prom? What's your opinion?
Hi Paisley, your hairstyle all depends on your gown, but here are a few looks...
Thank You!

A Healthy Plan
There's a way to stay healthy! Men in the US are supposed to eat 2,700 calories a day, but it's different for women. Women have to eat 2,200 calories a day. A way to help with weight reduction and maintenance is by eating a big breakfast.
The NHS (National Health Service) says that people should focus more on eating a healthy and well balanced diet, being physically active, and roughly balancing how many calories are consumed with the numbers burnt off each day. Be careful with what you drink and eat because over the last twenty years, sugar has been added to a growing number of foods we consume. Unfortunately, food labels in the USA and Europe do not include details of how much sugar is added. In industrialized nations and growing economies, people are consuming many more calories than they used to. Portion sizes in restaurants, both fast food ones as well as elegant places, are far larger today. For the human body to remain alive, it requires energy. Approximately 20% of the energy we use is for brain metabolism.
The majority of the rest of the body's energy requirements are taken up for the basal metabolic requirements (BMR, the minimal rate time at rest), the energy we need when you are resting, for functions such as the circulation of the blood and breathing. My personal opinion about this is that people should listen to this and stay healthy as possible because a ton of people today worry about their size and health. So, to stay healthy, watch how many calories you eat a day, eat a big breakfast to help, and watch what you eat because labels don't show everything.
The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II
by Elijah
The F-35 is a completely new breed of aircraft. Even though it's still in its final phase of extensive testing, people still hope to see it in service soon. Following the disappointingly short service of the F-22 Raptor, Lockheed Martin found a way to give the old design a complete overhaul and after a few prototypes, they came up with the F-35. The testing phase has had many upsides and downsides, such as the short time it can stay in the air, or the incredulously formidable features that could possibly be airborne by 2016. Of all the new things there are, I think that the advanced weapon systems like the FIRESTRIKE Solid State Laser, and the integrated helmet with a HUD (Heads Up Display) and advanced aiming system will be pretty awesome.

By:Cade
What if I told you that we have a sandbox in our school? This room is in our school IMC in Clear Lake Middle School and it is called The Sandbox. When you can get a tour of the sandbox is during iTime on October 12th-14th. Each trimester round will have challenges. Those very challenges will test your creativity, innovation, collaboration and design skills, such as K’NEX which is little building lines, sort of like legos, only much more skinny. These little bricks or lines put your mind to the test and can also be very frustrating because if you mess up one, then it all falls. Then you have to restart the whole thing because without that one little support block it all falls and you fail. With all of that fun you also get to make robotic machines and duct tape ties and all sorts of other clothing, and there is a lot more to go. Who can do this? Anybody can in grades 6-8, but they have to be signed up by October 16th by eight A.M. Why they made the sandbox? It was supposed to be a make-it-your-own room, then over the summer it just turned into the sandbox.
Different types of grenades
By: Sam
How many types of grenades do you think there are? There are ten different types of grenades. They are: fragmentation, concussion, anti-tank, stun, sting, chemical and gas, smoke, riot control, incendiary, practice. Fragmentation grenades are common in armies. They are weapons that are designed to disperse lethal fragments upon detonation. The concussion grenade is an anti-personnel device that is designed to damage its target with
explosive power alone. A range of hand-thrown grenades have been designed for use against armoured vehicles. A stun grenade, also known as a flash grenade or a flashbang, is a non-lethal weapon. It is designed to produce a blinding flash of light and loud noise without causing permanent injury. Sting grenades, also known as stingball or sting ball grenades, are stun grenades based on the design of the fragmentation grenade. Instead of using a metal casing to produce shrapnel, they are made from hard rubber and are filled with around 100 rubber balls. Upon detonation the rubber balls, and shrapnel from the rubber casing, explode outward in all directions as a form of less-lethal shrapnel. Chemical and gas grenades include smoke grenades and incendiary grenades. Unlike explosive grenades, chemical and gas grenades are designed to burn or to release a gas, not to explode. Smoke grenades are used as ground-to-ground or ground-to-air signalling devices, target or landing zone marking devices, and screening devices for unit movement. Tear gas grenades are similar to smoke grenades in terms of shape and operation. In tear gas grenades the filler is generally 80 to 120 grams of CS gas combined with a pyrotechnic composition which burns to generate an aerosol of CS-laden smoke. This causes extreme irritation to the eyes and, if inhaled, to the nose and throat. Incendiary grenades (or thermite grenades) produce intense heat by means of a chemical reaction. Greek Fire could be considered the earliest form of an incendiary grenade, which could be lit on fire and thrown in breakable pottery. Practice grenades are similar in handling and function to other hand grenades, except that they only produce a loud popping noise and a puff of smoke on detonation. The grenade body can be reused. Another type is the throwing practice grenade which is completely inert and often cast in one piece. It is used to give soldiers a feel for the weight and shape of real grenades and for practicing precision throwing.

Homework
By: Ashley Edits by: Sam
I believe that homework should not be optional in Iowa because homework is a form of studying so it helps us prepare and learn. So I asked other people on their opinions. Here are some of them:
• "I think that homework should be optional, because I have practice after school and church, so the last thing I want to do is homework." -Kacey
• "Not optional, because teachers want the best out of their students so they can get a college education." -Carson
• "I think homework should not be optional because then some kids that really need that extra time might not do the work, thus never getting better at the particular skill." -Gretchen
• "Not, because you will never get it done if it was." -Gavin
• "Optional, because I think it stinks." -Devin
• "Not optional, homework teaches and gives options to teach students, plus it teaches them responsibility."-Sam
Not optional wins!
Those are a bunch of great opinions. Thank you Kacey, Carson, Gretchen, Gavin and Devin.
Warfare Tech of the Modern Day
by Gavin
In the past, warfare was a lot more difficult and deadly, but thankfully in the modern day there are upgraded weapons and tech being used and made. A few of them I think are pretty cool. The general atomics blitzer which is in a series of guns called “railguns” uses magnetic force which makes the gun shoot ammo a lot faster at 5x the speed of sound, which is enough speed and power to shoot right through steel. The ammunition is still capable to keep flying for a few miles. Another weapon is the ADS. The ADS (Active Denial System) is a non-deadly tank looking weapon. It uses an invisible ray that causes a lot of pain until it’s done shooting. The science behind it is that the ray shoots at you causing the water and fat molecules on your skin to go berserk which is the cause of the pain you experience. The 32-MJ LRG is a missile launcher and another weapon in the rail gun series. This gun is not only fast, but it also shoots very very far at up to 220 miles. Unfortunately, this gun takes 3 million amps of power to shoot 1 missile, so it’s not currently being used in the military and Navy. And finally, The Redback is an electronic multi-barrelled assault gun that can use multiple types of ammo for the user to choose to use it lethally or non-lethally. This weapon is able to shoot at 3 targets accurately in as fast as 1.2 seconds! Now you know a little more about the weapons that are being used today. Just think about how much easier and less deadly wars will be in the future!

What's New About Food
By: Devin and Duchovny
We have found the perfect way to mess with your guests. I, Devin, started to make a recipe, at the Art Center Studio in Clear Lake. My director, Rocco, accidentally dumped salt instead of sugar into the bowl. 'Twas around April Fool's Day so we made a funny prank out of it.
Recipe serves 8:
4 teaspoons of salt
2 tablespoons of cinnamon
2 cups of pickle juice
3 tablespoons of sour cream
5 teaspoons of butter
Wigs For Kids
By: Delaney
What are you thankful for? Most would say family, friends, food, but what about hair? Many people have diseases like cancer leaving them hairless or bald. How would you feel if you couldn’t grow hair? To some of you, maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad thing, but to others, they might feel embarrassed, or ashamed. Nowadays there are organizations that help provide people with hair loss caused by a disease with wigs. Today we are going to focus on one of many organizations that help supply those who have hair loss with wigs, and that would be Wigs For Kids. People can cut their hair and then send it to Wigs For Kids who will turn the hair into a wig. This organization supplies wigs to kids all over the world who have diseases that don't let them grow hair.
Later in the summer, after three years of waiting, my mom and I decided to cut our hair and donate it to Wigs For Kids. We both got 12 inches cut off. At first it felt really weird and super light, but I like it now and am planning to donate again! If your are interested in donating it's really simple. Hair must be 12 inches for a proper hair length. You must clean the hair before cutting it, but before you send it, the hair must be dry or else it will get moldy. Hair must be sent in a pony tail. You can send the hair in a box, wrapped in tissue paper, then put in a ziploc and sent to Wigs for Kids Hair Donations 24231 Center Ridge Road Westlake, Ohio 44145 For more information you can go to the Wigs For Kids website to learn more http://www.wigsforkids.org/donate-a-ponytail
I remember when I donated my hair and the feeling of making some little girls day by donating hair is a feeling I will never forget.

North Korea: The Nuclear Capital of the World
By: Alec and Miz D
North Korea and South Korea were originally one country named Korea before WWII. When the war started Japan took it over as part of their battle ground. The U.S. and Russia recovered the land by the end of WWII. Russia, sadly started to change the northern part to communist of the country until it was divided into two separate countries.
In 1948, Kim Il Sung became the first leader of the communist North Korea. He was a part of the communist party in Russia when he was elected.
The Korean War started on June 25, 1950. When 75,000 troops from North Korea crossed the 38th parallel to attack South Korea. The U.S. sided with South Korea. Eventually, an agreement was made to make the 38th parallel the border for North and South Korea. Kim Il Sung continued as leader until his death in 1994, when his only son, Kim Jong Il was elected leader. Kim Jong Il died on December 17, 2011. His son, Kim Jong Un, took his position over his older brothers Kim Jong Nam, and Kim Jong Chul. The most extreme of the Kim family is Kim Jong Un. There’s no for sure reason why, but I believe it may have to do with him missing his dad. He has threatened to use nuclear bombs on South Korea and the U.S. There has not been actions against North Korea, but there may be a battle with them in the near future.

Boston Bruins: The Tragedy That Struck
By Eli
In 2013 the Boston Bruins were down in the Stanley Cup final 3-2. In game six, they were trying to tie up the series 3-3 to force a game seven on the Chicago Blackhawks. The Bruins were up 1-2 with two minutes left in the game. Chicago had the puck they skated down the ice and Bryan Bickell finished off a feed from Jonathan Toews to tie the game up 2-2 with 1:16 left in the game. After the goal, Boston got the puck back but they didn’t have it for long. Dave Bolland stole the puck from Boston, shot the puck, missed got the rebound, and just like that Chicago scored again with 58.9 seconds left in the game. Boston tried to tie the score, but no, the Blackhawks prevail and win the series 4-2 in six games.
In 2014 the Bruins tried to bounce back from that devastating Stanley Cup loss and they did perfectly going 41-27 on the season. this is not a good standing, but good enough Boston got the #1 seed in the NHL East and had to play a good Detroit team. Boston won the series and then went on to play another tough team the Montreal Canadians. Last season in the playoffs Boston beat Montreal to move on to the Stanley Cup final. Boston, after losing the 2013 Stanley Cup championship, lost the 2014 divisional playoff and ended their season without their big dream of winning two Stanley Cup finals in four years.
In 2015, Boston wanted to prove again why they are the best team in the league. Boston didn’t have a good season by not going to the playoffs and had to suffer watching their season fall apart. Boston also had to suffer seeing the Chicago Blackhawks win their second Stanley Cup final in three years. Boston looks to regain positivity in the 2015-2016 NHL season kicking off their season on October 7th at 6:00 pm playing the Winnipeg Jets.

A New Creative Kind of Pet
BY Carson
Everyone knows about your typical pet dog or the household guinea pig, but some citizens want their pet to be more customizable. A synthetic biology company called Cambrian Genomics raised over 10 million dollars in early February to create and invest in lasers used to sculpt and alter DNA in animals. This may sound crazy, but if you think about it, customizable animals were bound to become reality. Customers pay the organization a lot of money and give them an idea, base animal, and color scheme to shape, sculpt, and change the DNA in most animals to make them look, act, sound, or learn differently. It is like nibbling around the raisins in an oatmeal raisin cookie, except lasers are a little pricier and more precise. My opinion is that this could be a great thing for families that want the cutest cuddliest pet in the world. It could also be used for terrorism in the wrong hands. For now, the almost artificial animals aren’t known worldwide, but soon they may be the next big thing.

Behind The Scenes Of Hollywood's Stars!
By: Brooke & Kacey
Derek Hough is a five time Mirror Ball Champion on the hit tv show, Dancing With The Stars. Dancing With The Stars is a tv show where professional dancers, such as Derek, get paired up with a person who have no dance experience and the professional has to create an outstanding dance routine that will help get the judges scores up higher so they don't get eliminated. They also have to teach their partner the routine and make it an outstanding dance. Fun fact, Derek's sister, Julianne Hough, is a two time Mirror Ball Champion too, and she's been a judge on Dancing With The Stars now for two years! Derek was born May 17, 1985 (30) in Salt Lake City, Utah. He's a professional dancer, choreographer, singer, songwriter, and he's acted in a couple films such as DanceX in 2007 & Make Your Move in 2013. On season 20 of Dancing With The Stars, his cousin Riker Lynch vs Derek in the fight to win the Mirror Ball, but they both didn't win. Derek has won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Choreography for several routines that he choreographed for the show (Dancing With The Stars).
All of Hough's grandparents and his parents were dancers, so you could say that dancing is in his blood. Dance is a very strong passion of Derek's. In his early life, his parents sent him at age twelve to London to live and study with dance coaches Corky and Shirley Ballas. A few months later his sister, Julianne, joined him in London. The Ballas' helped tutor Derek and Julianne alongside their own son, Mark Ballas, schooling them at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. They received training in song, theater, gymnastics, and many forms of dance, including ballet, tap, and jazz. Derek, Mark, and Julianne even had their own trio called, 2B1G (two boys, one girl) and performed at many dance competitions in the UK and U.S., and showcased UK television show. As of right now, Derek is still living his passion (dancing), and works to the hardest to make himself a better person.
"All the power to them. I say yay."

Taylor Alison Swift was born on December 13, 1989, in Reading, Pennsylvania. Swift spent her early years on her family's Christmas tree farm in nearby Wyoming. Her grandmother had been a professional opera singer, and Swift soon followed in her footsteps. By the age of 10, Swift was singing at a variety of local events, including fairs and contests. She sang "The Star-Spangled Banner" at a Philadelphia 49ers game at the age of 11, and began writing her own songs and learning guitar at 12 years old. To pursue her music career, Swift often visited Nashville, Tennessee, the country music capital. Taylor Swift was country to the bone until recently she had a change of heart. She went pop, with her grand song, "Shake it Off" made it to the public. She hasn't written a country song since.
Her more recent, more popular songs are "Blank Space", "Style", "Wildest Dreams", and "Bad Blood". She is famous for writing songs about her ex-boyfriends. To quote Swift, "I have to believe in fairytales, and I have to believe in love." 'Bad Blood' is about some "bad blood" between her and some other Hollywood star, most likely Selena Gomez or Miley Cyrus. Taylor Swift is really the only well-known singer-songwriter who hasn't gone 'bad', in my opinion, she will. Right now she is a role model to little girls all over the world!
“Just be yourself. There is no one better.”

The World of Tomorrow
By: Ashley, Gretchen, and Duchovny
Have you ever heard of the movie, Divergent? Beatrice Prior (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) are the two main characters in the movie. Their society is split into 5 groups by what they believe in, which is either being selfless (Abnegation), brave (Dauntless), honest (Candor), intelligent (Erudite), or kind (Amity).
Gretchen: "I think I would fit in Erudite and Candor because I am highly intelligent and my friends agree. I also think Candor would be a good fit because I am very truthful but, I keep to myself."
Duchovny: "I think I would fit in with brave (Dauntless) because I don't care what happens. I don't care if I get in trouble and I will do whatever I won't."
It took place in a dystopian world in Chicago. There was a war causing them to separate from other people. The president of an organization (revealed in another movie) saw that a few people were special and set them, and others, apart from other cities and people.
Freeing Leia
By: Sam and Jeffrey (who like Star Wars)
While freeing Senator Leia Organa (after she was captured on an imperial star cruiser), Han Solo (a gambler) and Luke Skywalker (a mechanic) dress up as clones taking Chewbacca (a bear like creature) in for arrest. Chewbacca takes the gun from Han Solo and starts shooting the generals and captains. Then, Luke finds Leia's cell and frees her while Han Solo is barking orders at clones to not come into the detention center, but the clones do anyways. So they have to escape the cell rooms through the garbage shoot, to escape the clones from taking back Leia and putting Luke and Han in a cell also In the end they get free from the imperial star destroyer, but Ben Kenobi (Luke's friend) dies holding off Darth Vader (an evil person). In the end of the story, will the Rebels destroy the Death Star (the dark side’s (the evil empire) mega space laser) and set the dark side back in there plan to take over the universe?

Now Days Should There Be a Dress Code?
BY: Delaney and Zoe
During 2007-2008, 16.5% of public schools had uniforms while 54% of the other schools had a stricter dress codes. We think that some middle schools have been lacking on this “stricter” dress code. Our thoughts on this is that there should be no uniforms but a more strict dress code. We think people should express themselves through their styles but not too wild. There should be a limit to how short your shorts are to how baggy your pants are! Our list below is of what we think to wear and what not to wear to school!
What Not to Wear
NO short shorts ( it should be down to our your fingertips )
NO baggy short that show boy’s underwear
NO hats
NO strapless shirts
NO shirts that show a lot of skin on your chest
NO skirts or dress above your fingertips
NO spaghetti straps
NO too baggy clothes
What to Wear
Appropriate length shorts
Two finger length straps on a shirt
Appropriate shoes
Shirts that cover your stomach
Skirts/Dresses that are down to your fingertips (While standing tall not with your shoulders slumped)
Wear appropriate graphic shirts meaning no bad signs
Wear things that fit you just right not too tight, not too baggy
Just wear things that express you!
We aren’t saying that you should wear a turtleneck to school, just wear clothes that fit your body in an appropriate way (not too tight, not too big, or anything too short), that expresses you in a good way!

COD Champs: MLG or Fishing?
by: Gavin And Devin
Would you play in the COD Champs for 400,000 dollars if you could? These players definitely did! On March 27-29 of 2015, 32 teams (including FaZe, OpTic Gaming, and Team Kaliber) from 25 different countries such as America, Canada, and the UK competed in the COD (Call of Duty) Championships, which was hosted by the MLG (Major League Gaming) channel in Los Angeles. The teams were competing for the 1st place prize of $400,000 which ended up being given to the team known as Denial eSports.
The top 8 placings were:
1st: Denial eSports
2nd: Team Revenge
3rd: FaZe Red
4th: Prophecy
5th: Automatic Reload
6th: PLT.Mindfreak
7th: OpTic Gaming
8th: Team Kaliber
The competition consisted of different game modes within Call of Duty Advanced Warfare such as: Search and Destroy, Capture the Flag, Uplink and Hardpoint. You play Search and Destroy by finding a bomb that the other team has placed within the map and you detonate it before time runs out and it explodes.
To play Uplink you must capture a ball which is in the middle of the map and throw it into an orb to score points without getting killed.
In Capture the Flag, there are two teams that verse each other to try to get a flag from their opposing side of the map and get it to their team’s side. In the competition, there are four players on each team, usually two people stay and protect the flag while the other two that are called slayers fight to get the opposing team's flag. They will repeat this process three times in one round out of three or before the time which is set to 10 minutes is over.
Hardpoint is where there is a place on a map and two teams have to try to capture the Hardpoint in that spot. After that you must stay in that spot for 45 seconds without the other team capturing it. Unlike Capture the Flag, all four players will go for the objective. The Hardpoint will move around the map until your set score of 250 has been reached. You score points by holding the Hardpoint. Now you know a little more about COD Champs and when the next championships are held, make sure to tune in for an exciting match!

The Only Orion Spacecraft
By Carson and Caden
Many people believe, and so do we, that humans will be to Mars in a few years, and it will not take a long time to reach it. Are the peoples’ thoughts true? NASA has been working on this for many years, but we are not even close. The Orion Spacecraft is being manufactured in the VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building) at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, which is the largest building by mass in the USA. Attached to Orion will be the largest engine ever, the SLS (Space Launch System), that will carry the astronauts and huge rocket to Mars in 2030. There will be more discoveries later, like where Orion will be landing on Mars, but for now we have limited information. We believe the outcome will be positive because even if something happens to go wrong we will have further knowledge and know what to fix. Now you know our opinion of the Orion Spacecraft and its mission to Mars, but what is yours?

The Real Deal in Syria
By Sofia
Today, in the middle eastern country of Syria, millions of people are leaving after years of civil war. The war started when 15 school children were arrested and tortured for anti-government graffiti in 2011, which led to protests by the Syrian people. The Syrian government opened fired on the protesters, even killing a mourner at one of the school children's funeral. The populace called for president Bashar al-Assad to step down. He refused. It is reported that sarin gas, was used by the Syrian government on its own people in 2013.
