JMS Weekly Update
August 9, 2020
Dear JMS Families,
Welcome to Jefferson Middle School for the 2020-2021 school year!
We have been busy over the summer preparing for another successful year. Although there are still some uncertainties surrounding this school year, we want you to know that we are excited for this school year to begin. We are excited to see the children, and we are excited to partner with you throughout this journey!
We wanted to reach out to share some information about upcoming events that we are in the process of planning (see the upcoming events section below). We are working hard to make sure that our families and children know what to expect for the 2020-2021 school year. We want you to know that these events are important to us.
It is also important to us that we provide you with meaningful and accurate communication, so we will continue to send our JMS Weekly Updates. The updates will be sent via email to all of our families every Sunday at 1:00PM. These updates will also be posted on the Jefferson Middle School Website, Facebook and Twitter pages.
Below you will find information from our Technology Department and the JMS PTA. The JMS Spiritwear Sale is up and running for one more day and will be open again in the coming weeks.
We know that you have questions. We are here to support you. Please reach out to us with any questions.
We are looking forward to welcoming the children back to school soon!
Take Care and Stay Safe,
Dr. Sarah Shaw, Principal
Ms. Katelyn Deet, Assistant Principal

A Message From the Technology Department
Throughout the year, families and students ask us for our advice on what type of device they should buy for use by their Mt. Lebanon students. To be clear, families will never be required to purchase a computer for a student to do work at home that is being asked of them by their teachers. During times when such computing devices are needed for the home - and when students are learning in a hybrid or fully remote model - the Mt. Lebanon School District is committed to providing those devices for families to borrow for use at home.
If you are interested in purchasing a device for your student and would like some advice, we have tried to summarize our recommended considerations. Click the link above for more information.

Resources For Families
Safe2Say Something is a youth violence prevention program run by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. The program teaches youth and adults how to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others and to “say something” BEFORE it is too late. With Safe2Say Something, it’s easy and confidential to report safety concerns to help prevent violence and tragedies.
Here’s how it works:
- Submit a report through the Safe2SaySomething system
- Crisis center reviews, assesses and processes all submissions
- Crisis center sends all submissions to school administration and/or law enforcement for intervention
- If needed, crisis center may contact tipster anonymously through the app
