Valentine’s Day is coming soon! Your child will be able to pass out valentines to their homeroom class and Ridgeway Staff. Look for more information about logistics coming today in your child’s Unit A folder. Valentines may be brought to school beginning Monday, February 7.

Unit C
Unit C is looking ahead on the calendar to Valentine’s Day. This is the last school party of the year. Students will be allowed to pass out Valentine Cards if they wish throughout the week of February 7-11. If students chose to bring valentines, they must bring one valentine for each person in their homeroom. Outside of their homeroom, students may bring valentines for whomever they’d like.

From the Art Room
Oh no, a spill? A hole? Can’t draw hands? No biggie! How can we as artists see a problem as an opportunity? How can we practice flexibility? One of the most frustrating and satisfying parts of the artmaking process is problem solving. Artists are experts at thinking critically about issues that inevitably arise while creating art. During the month of February, we will really dive into this concept.
After reading Barney Saltzberg’s “Beautiful Oops!”, we will discover that “when you think you have made a mistake, [we can] think of it as an opportunity to make something beautiful.” Then, artists will be given a sheet of paper with a predetermined mistake - a smudge, a rip, a coffee ring. Artists will transform this mistake into something new and wonderful using any material at hand in the Ridgeway art studio.
This exercise in art transfers to all aspects of life and learning, which is what makes the arts such a vital part of education. Here in a safe studio space, we can explore mistakes and creatively engage with them. Perhaps practicing here makes our real world mistakes not so daunting. We can find joy, fun, and possibility in accidents and in temporary disappointments.
Ridgeway Spelling Bee
Ridgeway students are invited to participate in the School Spelling Bee. Please use the link below to register your child/children. The event will take place on Thursday, February 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the gym. Parents are invited. The deadline to register is Tuesday, February 8. This is a firm deadline as I need time to prepare materials. If your student is not a member of the Spelling Club and would like a study packet, please indicate that on the registration form. If you prefer, you may send me, Maria Cox, an email or a note with the following information: student name, homeroom/unit/age, parent name, parent email and phone number, home address, and need a study packet. Please send to mcox@cpsk12.org. I am looking forward to a great competition!

Label! Label! Label!
Label! Label! Label! Your child should be wearing a heavy coat, gloves, and hat to school every day during cold weather. Please label the inside of your child’s cold-weather gear with their name.
