Message from the GIS Principals...
As we wrap up our first marking period, we would like to take a minute and share how much we appreciate the complimentary messages from parents regarding our dedication to maintaining a safe place for our students to learn during these trying times. Our quality partnerships with our parents and community have made our efforts to maintain a safe and healthy environment much easier. This past week our community has seen an increase in cases and the effects are being felt here at school. We understand these are confusing and stressful times, but we appreciate the outpouring of support and patience from our families. At this time, we are confident that our Return to Learn Plan has been effective and has put us in a good position for continuing a safe and effective face to face learning platform. Please continue to be patient and understand that your student’s safety is our number one priority. Therefore, we will continue to work with the Health Department of Northwest Michigan regarding protocols to mitigate the spread of the virus. Community is defined as a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. Our goal is to continue to strive to provide a safe environment and provide a quality education for each and every student that inspires them to achieve their potential. Expect the Best!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Putnam and Mr. Byram

Important Reminders
- Facial Coverings - Due to the new Emergency Order that MDHHS announced on October 29, 2020, students and staff are required to wear their masks at all times, except during meals.
- Health Screener - Please remember to screen your child every day before sending them to school. We ask that you do not send your child to school if they are sick.
- Hygiene and Social Distancing - Please remind your child the importance of proper hand washing and sanitizing. We will be practicing proper hygiene at school, along with social distancing.
- Contact Tracing - We work closely with the Health Department of Northwest Michigan to determine the need for contact tracing. If the school or Health Department notifies you that your child has been in close contact with a positive or probable case, we ask for your patience and understanding with this process. We will error on the side of caution to keep each and every one of our students safe and healthy.
- COVID-19 Dashboard - New to the GCS website (gaylordschools.com) is the COVID-19 Dashboard. This site is updated frequently to keep our families informed of our current situation as it relates to COVID-19.
Counselor's Corner - Safety Lessons
Children need knowledge and skills to protect themselves. As part of the guidance curriculum at GIS, a lesson on personal safety will be presented to all grades starting in the month of November. The lesson will address safety rules to follow at school and in the community, and will also help student’s identify the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touch. If you have any questions regarding the content of this lesson, please contact Kate Martell, GIS Counselor, at 989-731-0856, ext.1509.
Dress for the Weather
It is important for the children to come prepared for the season's weather conditions. Please help your child remember to bring appropriate coats, hats, gloves or mittens, and boots.
Free Flu Shots at GIS!
The Gaylord Blue Devil Wellness Center (GBDWC) will be onsite at Gaylord Intermediate School to provide free flu vaccinations on November 23 and December 10. GBDWC, in partnership with the State of Michigan, will be offering free FluMist (nasal flu vaccination). In order to provide this vaccination, your student will need a consent form completed (see attachment below). Please complete and return the form to the school with your child. If you have completed a consent form in the past (for physicals or immunizations), another one does not need to be completed. Please contact the GBDWC at (989) 732-6890 to set up an appointment or if you have any questions.
