The underworld of teenagers

Dun Dun Dun!!!!!

What does it mean to be 'cool'? and how important is it?

Being cool means people wanting to try to hard to impress people and fit in. Liz thinks in order to be cool she needs to have everything first and be the center of attention. To Olivia and I, we don't think it's that important to be cool because we both don't care what other people think. Liz doesn't really thinks it's important anymore since she's dead. Liz never wanted anyone to see or know she was trying to be cool.

What's the advantage of being around people who have similar outlooks and interests?

There's a lot of advantages. When you have a group of friends that have the same interests as you, you can join into the conversation and agree with what they're saying. You wouldn't feel left out if you know exactly what your friends are talking about. While you understand the conversation, you know what they're going through.

Examples

Teenagers and drugs

Why do you think young people use drugs/alcohol? Is it a problem?

Everybody wants to do what everyone else is doing and feel cool. If you don't join along with all your 'cool' friends, they will either peer pressure or make you feel left out.

"According to a survey on teenhelp.com, teens in high school admitted to using drugs or alcohol in the past 30 days:

-Alcohol: 48%

-Marijuana: 19.9%

-Cocaine: 2.3%

-Steroids: 1.6%"

Yes, it's a problem because on teenhelp.com it states, "High school seniors: from 12% in 1992 to 20%. 10th graders: from 8% in 1992 to 16%. 8th graders: from 4% in 1992 to 6%" Since upperclassmen is doing drugs, the younger teens are looking up to them and following their footsteps thinking it's okay and cool to do that.

At what point does using drugs or alcohol become a problem?

It's always a problem no matter how bad the situation is but it becomes a bigger problem when people start dying and becoming sick from it. In our book, Elsewhere, a rock star named Curtis Jest dies from drug abuse. His arm is all black and weird from putting all the drugs into his arm.

One teen said she "swears 90 percent of this population smoke dope." Is this true in your school?

It isn't true in our school. Only a few people to smoke. Overall, our school is good with not smoking. We have been through so much D.A.R.E. that we know it's not cool or right to do. She probably said this because she wants to exaggerate to show it's a big problem and that it might be one day 90 percent.
