The Hungate Echo

Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Autumn Term 1 - Issue 4

A word from Mr Broom.

Wow! What a wonderful week we've had across school. Things are certainly very busy at the moment and that's just how I like it. It's also great to see the children with huge smiles on their faces and attendance is currently well above the national average, which is an indicator that lessons are exciting and fresh.

Our Y6 children have had a fabulous week in Low Mill, the outdoor activity centre in Askrigg, Wensleydale. Experiences ranging from Kayaking to Bushcraft have kept them on their toes. When I left on Wednesday night at 9pm, I could tell there were some very tired eyes ready for bed, and that's just the staff. As always our children have been a credit to us when out and about in the community, and it was great to hear from the staff on how polite and courteous their behaviour had been.

In their absence, the other children in school have enjoyed football tournaments, parent/children lunches and cross-phase activities based around our whole school focus on inspiration, to name a few.

I'd also like to say a huge thank you to everyone for coming along to our first parent consultations of the year. These are really important meetings to give you an idea of how your child has settled into school and also how you can help to support your child too.

Finally, I'm really looking forward to next week. Our football club and Sherburn Voices choir begin on Thursday and Friday respectively. I've got my shinpads ready for some tough tackling!

I hope you have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you next week.

Our first golden star winners

I updated you last week on our new behaviour ladder system in school. Well, we've had our first Golden Star Winners! These are children who continuously make their way each day to the top of the behaviour ladder and we're so proud of them that we reward them with a golden star.

Our Senior Leadership Team & Staffing

Now that we're a few weeks into our first half term, I thought i'd update you all on how the staffing and leadership structures are set up.

The senior leadership team in school comprises of:

Myself as Headteacher. I take a strategic lead on whole school teaching & learning, the leadership of key stage one, pupil outcomes, attendance and I am the senior designated safeguarding leader.

Mrs Weights is the leader of teaching and learning for the early years and Mrs Weights is our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator (SENDCo).

Miss Mackay is the leader of teaching and learning in key stage two. Miss Mackay takes a strategic lead on behaviour and the curriculum and she is also the deputy designated safeguarding leader.

As we continue to move forwards rapidly, we will be making an internal appointment of a deputy headteacher for the remainder of this academic year. This is aimed at bolstering the whole school leadership team to secure high quality outcomes for our children. I'll update you in the coming weeks of the outcome of this.

Parent Governor Vacancy

Our governing body are looking to appoint a new parent governor. If you are interested in being a parent governor, please email with a brief statement around your skills and what you could bring to the table.

The role of a parent governor is to be a critical friend of the school. Our current governing body has a wide skills set ranging from finance to safeguarding and HR. If you think your skills set would make us stronger, please apply.

Parent Luncheon

Thank you to everyone who came along to our parent lunch events. It was great to see so many of you enjoying the wonderful food that our kitchen provides. Thank you to all our lunchtime and admin staff who worked hard to pull this off.

Welcome back Miss Hall

A quick note just to say welcome back to Miss Hall, our year one teacher who works with Mrs Robertson. It's lovely to have her back in school.

Y5 Football Tournament

Our year five children had the chance to represent our school at the local school football tournament on Thursday afternoon, held at Sherburn High School. I must say, the facilities there are truly amazing!

The children battled hard and were a real credit to our school (I seem to say this everytime we're out and about). We all had a super time.

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate, we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Year 6 Class who are our attendance champions in school this week.

As you can see below, out attendance in many classes is way above the national average which is fantastic. Thank you for your support on this.
