PHS Update
April 2nd, 2018
April is Here!
The weather is switching back on us this week, looking like rain and cooler temps toward the end of the week. Nevertheless, we are ready for state testing, Mr GQ, the band/choir trip to New Orleans (next week), HOSA and SkillsUSA conferences, and lots of athletic contests (see specific updates below).
Details for Tom Griffin's memorial service were sent on earlier but here they are:
The Griffin family has scheduled a memorial celebration of life ceremony for Saturday, April 14 at 2:00pm in Casa Grande High School's gymnasium. All staff, students and community members are welcome. For those unfamiliar with the Casa campus, enter the parking lot near the tennis courts off of Ely. The gym is adjacent to the football stadium. There is also a parking lot at the front of campus off Casa Grande Road as well as street parking on Ely and Casa Grande.
Please read on for highlights from the past week and what is ahead. Don't forget Open House coming up on April 19th.
Have a great week!

Important Counseling Info: Online Courses + SRJC Summer
If your student is either currently enrolled in an online class or considering one for next school year, please keep the following things in mind. Online classes taken outside of PHS are not monitored by counselors or any PHS staff, so it is the responsibility of the parents to monitor work and progress towards completion. For seniors, classes should be finished up by Friday, May 18th (including taking the final) so that there is time to have the work graded and a final transcript sent to the counseling department. Please remember that online classes are not great for everyone's learning styles and sometimes even bright students struggle in an online environment. When classes are taken through PHS directly, we are able to provide more support via the teachers and the counselors, and when it comes to AP classes, the teachers are trained to prepare the students for the AP tests in the spring and the curriculum is supported through college board. Although online appeals to many, it is important to consider your student's individual needs and make sure that the plan is communicated to your student's counselor.
SRJC Summer info:
Some interesting news form SRJC regarding summer classes this week. In case you are unaware, the budget is an issue at SRJC and one consideration was to cut back the summer program. It appears now that some sort of summer school offerings will be available, but we encourage you to check carefully as the situation continues to unfold. See the article below for information.
Assuming al things are a go...Are you interested in taking a SRJC class in summer 2018 or fall 2018? The schedule is available now and concurrent registration forms are due to SRJC BEFORE students can register. Registration starts Thursday, April 26th. Trojan Baseball Firmly on the Map
Last week, the Trojans baseball squad took part in the prestigious Boras Classic, a 32 team tournament that matches the best from the Southern California area with the top NorCal teams. The Trojans did themselves proud, going 2-2 and ending up in 10th place. Along the way, the Trojans toppled Carlmont and cross-town rival, Casa Grande, before battling it out into the 7th inning versus talented San Benito. The teams traded runs and went to the 7th tied at 5 before San Benito plated a runner in that inning. All in all, a fine showing for the Trojans.
Not surprisingly, there was a letdown at Piner this weekend, where the Trojans dropped a league contest 12-4. The team will enjoy some rest this week before hosting the very-talented Serra Padres on Thursday. Serra is the #10 ranked team in the state and the Trojans will have their hands full. Hopefully, the rain will hold off and allow us to get that one in.
Go Trojans!

The Trojans have a big week ahead, visiting difficult Casa Grande who will be out for revenge after an earlier loss to the Trojans, and a home match versus league rival Analy on Thursday. Go Trojans Tennis!

We invite you to join us next week for a Safe Routes To School (SRTS) high school WALK AUDIT* that will take place at Petaluma High School. Your input towards this audit is valuable and I hope you will be able to participate.

The Petaluma High School audit will be on April 04, 2018 (Wednesday) from 7am to 8am.
Here’s an outline for the Audit hour:

We are reaching out to the Petaluma community at large to invite various stakeholders to attend the audit. We would surely appreciate it if you could pass the word on to anyone in your circle of influence. Drop-ins are most welcome.
There will be a community meeting at the school library on April 12, 2018 (Thursday) from 6pm to 7pm to present information on bike and pedestrian safety and the scope of this project. We look forward to your participation.
Swimming Update!
In the second of five SCL dual meets this season, both the Boy’s and Girl’s teams were victorious over the visiting Piner Prospectors. The Girls won 112-57, and the Boys score was 112-40.
Three Trojan swimmers were double winners: Ana Larson in the Girl’s 100 Breastroke and 100 Butterfly; Cooper Woods in the Boy’s 500 Freestyle and 100 Butterfly; and Alexander Starling in Boy’s 100 Freestyle and 200 I.M.
Emma Deen, Abagail Kreutz, Shae Whaley, and Aurora Beaumond all secured first place finishes for the Girls, while Michael Duffy and Colton Prieto did so for the Boys. Twenty-five Petaluma swimmers contributed individual points and several more participated in scoring relays.
The Boy’s carry a 2-0 record into next Thursday’s meet against El Molino team, while the Girl’s improved to 1-1. That meet will be the Trojan’s final home contest and will begin at 4:00 P.M. at the Petaluma Swim Center.
