Mrs. Lee's Weekly Update
News for the Week of January 9, 2013
Happy New Year
I hope everyone had a great holiday break. It was great to have some time off to spend with family. I am excited about being back at school with the kids. We are off to a good start and are wrapping up the second nine weeks.
Germs, germs, germs
Tis' the season for the germs to spread! We have two kids out with the flu right now and several others with colds. Rest assured that I am encouraging good hand washing and covering when sneezing or coughing. We are on our last box of Kleenex. If you are able, please pick up some tissues and/or disinfectant wipes so we can do our best to stay well. Also, please keep your child home until they are fever-free for 24 hours.
What Are We Learning?
- Reading Workshop- identifying the main idea and details in informational texts, asking questions to further our understanding while reading informational text
- Math Workshop- using defining attributes to make two dimensional shapes, use 2D and 3D shapes to compose new shapes, telling time to the hour and half-hour
- Science- comparing features of the day and night sky, recalling facts about the sun, illustrate changes in the moon's appearance
- Writing Workshop- using an editor's checklist to edit for spelling, capital letters, and punctuation
Observing the Night Sky
In class, we are reading and discussing features of the sky. If you are out at night the next few weeks, point out the moon to your child and discuss what shape it is at that time. Then, have your child predict what shape it will be the next day. The kids need to see that the moon changes appearance (goes from new moon, crescent, half, full) and that this occurs in a pattern over a month.
