Mini Quilt Auction
The mini quilt auction and the booth help pay for our program speakers. Right now, I have 2 I made & 1 from Ann Houpt officially registered on the website. I have laid eyes on 2 from Nancy Houston and 1 from Jean Moulder. I have hopes of something from Sarah Tutt and Grace Stroud. Those might just about fund 2 speakers… maybe.
Please, finish getting your quilt entry ready to register. Then consider making a nice table runner or a fabulous bag if a mini seems too challenging. If it can hang on a rod in a 24” square space (perhaps folded), we can sell it in the auction.
Note: Single blocks need pizazz to attract buyers.
Size window for mini-quilts is larger than 10” on smallest side and smaller than 24” on largest.
The mini-quilt auction registration form is finally available: https://sewingexpo.com/.../Mini-Quilt-Auction-Entry-Form....
Looking forward to seeing the wonderful pieces you are making

Art Quilting Interest Group
This group explores the wonderfully diverse world of art quilting, and the materials and techniques used. No experience or training is needed, just curiosity about how things work and a willingness to experiment with creating without judging the “goodness” of the results. This is playtime!

Tight Knots Bee
Our April meeting was hosted by Peggie Herring. As usual we spent time catching up with each other’s lives as we discussed our aches and pains; getting old is not for sissies. Then our discussions turned to stories about everyone’s dogs. Somewhere in the middle of show and tell Pat Wagers, Cheri Bigham, and Cecilia Villa started tales on ducks in their pools (Hilarious). But on to show and tell—Pat Wagers made us all a small Easter mat. They were so cute. Where does she find the time and energy? She also showed a pillow Grace Stroud made for her and three mini quilts Pat quilted. Carolyn Hughes shared a large hexagon quilt made of fall fabrics. Carolyn’s sister Barbara Hughes (our new bee sister) showed us a scrappy quilt with a double red borders. Cheri Bigham quilted a wheelchair quilt and some cosmetic bags. Cecilia Villa showed us the cute embroidered bunny stakes she made for an Easter egg hunt and finger puppets. She is always doing fun stuff. Peggie Herring has finished her NICU quilt already (Making me look bad). The NICU quilts aren’t due till November. She also made potato bags for her grandkids. Judi Janes had a new ruler to show us for cutting strips. Pat Wagers and Pat Ford celebrated their birthday months with beautiful fabrics from their bee sisters. Pat Wagers received children’s prints and Pat Ford received polka dots. This month we collected eighty-four pairs of socks for Safe Haven. After eating Millionaire pie, jelly beans, and chocolate covered pretzels we played Left Right Center. Barbara Anderson won the gorgeous orange fabrics this month. And we all went home happy with chocolate filled Easter eggs and Easter cookies. Thanks Miss Peggie, a good time was had by all.

May Meeting
This month’s meeting was hosted by Cheri Bigham. We started with lots of talk about everything old, our houses, furniture, and you name it. We quickly moved on to show and tell. Pat Wagers presented a darling quilt made for her great-great nephew. Yep, we ARE getting old. Cecilia Villa showed an entire wardrobe she sewed for her granddaughter. I want to be that little girl, she will be receiving 4 or 5 sundresses and two new tops. One of the sundresses is tea length. One dress is for the 4th of July and has her name on it. Carolyn Hughes shared her NICU quilt with cute insect fabric and a maple leaf quilt she made for sister. Peggie Herring showed a table runner and a potato bag made for her daughter. Grace Stroud’s show and tell was two NICU quilts. They were pink, gray, and white; you just had to smile when looking at those quilts. She has also started a pillow of the month project. Each month you get a different pillowcase and wrap to make for your pillow. She also made a pieced quilt of valor and passed it on to Cecilia Villa to quilt. Next, we viewed the pillowcases we made for Safe Haven. Twice a year we make two pillowcases each for the families at Safe Haven. It is always fun to see the colorful fabrics bee members find and put together. (See picture below.) We finished our business part of the meeting with Cecilia Villa checking out her birthday fabrics. Cecilia received some really beautiful Kaffe Fassett fabric. Cheri served us two kinds of homemade coffee cakes and cookies. We ended our afternoon with a game of Left Right Center for blue fat quarters. Miss Cheri won our fabric.

Start a Bee
One of the most fun parts of belonging to a Guild is getting to know other quilters. But, there aren’t many opportunities to actually get to SEW and learn from one another, except in a bee. Most of the guild bees have been around for many years and don’t have openings for many newcomers. If you want to get know more of your fellow members, start a new bee!
General Guidelines
- 7-9 members. Start with the people sitting near you at Guild or advertise in the bee section of the newsletter, or on the FB page.
- A place to meet: dining room table, living room, playroom, apartment clubhouse, nearby church… You may want to rotate hosting among those with enough space.
- Monthly meeting time for 1.5-4 hours. Some groups may also have periodic all-day project days or retreats.
- Some groups organize around a common interest: appliqué, modern, art, charity projects, while some are based on proximity.
- Start simply and see how the group’s dynamics play out through time. There are lots of activity ideas online.
BEV RAMSEY FUND
Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, a teacher and a friend. We lost her way too early. The Bev Ramsey fund was set up to help those in need enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops.
QUILTS OF VALOR
Quilts of Valor
We are nearing our one year anniversary of being an official Quilts of Valor Group! In the past twelve months we have awarded 37 quilts. This is an accomplishment we can all be very proud of.
The most recent quilt was awarded at a private ceremony at a home in Keller. LtCol. Nate Green spent 20 years in the Marine Corps, serving our country. He was nominated by an aunt who lives in North Carolina.
The next ceremony will be for an Air Force veteran who served in both the Korean war and Vietnam. He lives in Mineral Wells. We will have a small ceremony at the Vietnam War Museum in Mineral Wells on May 11th at 11AM.
I hope everyone who picked up quilt kits and block kits has been finishing them up. Please remember to bring them to the next meeting.

Lovies
If you would like to make one (or 100) take two pieces of 14" square fabric - one cotton, and one flannel. Sew them right sides together, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then topstitch around the entire piece.
Beverly Peterson collects them at Guild meetings to give to Cook Children's. Cook's is always very grateful for the gifts.
NICU QUILTS
NICU Quilts
JPS is always so pleased to get our donations! One of the volunteer coordinators and two nurses are even going to come to our next fidget bee to lend a hand and share advice and experiences.
We primarily do 36"x36" pre-washed quilts and fidget quilts.
Other items accepted are lovies (10x10 or 12x12), resolution squares, ostomy bag covers and post-mastectomy heart pillows. Adult quilt sizes requested are Lap (39"x48"), Throw (52"x60") and Twin (60"x75") More info on these is on the following website.
Thanks for your help.

News From Texas Quilt Museum
Texan Themes and a Doll Debut
at the Museum This Spring & Summer!
LA GRANGE, TEXAS—May 8, 2023—For the first time in its history, the Texas Quilt Museum will present four exhibits on display simultaneously featuring a wide array of “Extra Texas” subjects, collections, and artists. Running from May 11-August 26, 2023 will be A Tribute to Mary Ann Vaca-Lambert, Western Quilts by Sarah Dryden, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Blue Ribbon Winners, and the doll exhibit What a Doll!
Special Event! Saturday, May 13!
Mark Lambert will give a talk at 3 pm about Mary Ann's work. Admission is free beginning at 2 pm.
A Tribute to Mary Ann Vaca-Lambert features 21 pieces done by the late accomplished artist who first learned to sew at the age of six, but also expressed her creativity in drawing, printmaking, and pottery. She also directed arts programs to adults and children throughout the state. Though small in size, those who knew her say her smile “lit up a room” and that family and friends were the center of her life. The quilts here include gardens, flowers, abstracts, and self-portraits of Lambert herself.
“Mary Ann’s exhibit presents the history of her art quilt journey. Who doesn’t remember La Virgen de Guadalupe, or her Coneflower, each beautiful in its own right?” Museum Curator Vicki Mangum says. “The colorful flowers and the self-portrait are a must see. Sadly, Mary Ann passed away in 2022.”
Western Quilts by Sarah Dryden features six works inspired by and used in her Ph.D. thesis “Imagining the Home: The West and the Western.” The works here juxtapose the reality of living in the West from the 1920s-1960s with what was portrayed to the world via Hollywood’s popular Western and cowboy movies. They tell that story with media and creative formats outside of simply fabric, and the role of women is especially addressed. This body of work therefore seeks to question the populist perception and importance of the home in the “Wild West.”
“It’s surprising to find a person writing their thesis on a topic that includes the making of quilts, especially when that person has never made a quilt before,” Mangum says. “And her artist’s statements further explain her goal and vision with this project.”
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Blue Ribbon Winners 2023 has 28 works judged to be the best in numerous age and theme categories by the committee for the sizable annual event in Houston and were on display during it earlier this year. Every quilt that collected points that fell within a certain range of points was awarded a Blue Ribbon, and many of them are included here. The Museum will be working further with the HLSR on a collaborative Rodeo Quilt Contest for 2024.
Finally, What a Doll! Showcases 86 of the multi-media artworks from some of the best artists working in the genre today. It’s curated by legendary doll artist, teacher, and enthusiast elinor peace bailey.
“These are some of the most interesting and attractive dolls I’ve seen displayed together in a very long time,” Mangum says. “Dolls and dollmaking bring out the child in us, when our imagination was colorful, whimsical, and full of fantasy. You will definitely enjoy this exhibit of handmade dolls!”
The Texas Quilt Museum is located at 140 W. Colorado St., La Grange, Texas 78945. Hours are 10 am-4 pm Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Visit www.TexasQuiltMuseum.org.
