Middle School News - November 13
Go Wildcats!
Message from Ms. Roletto
Welcome to second quarter of our journey through this unexpected year.
I want to thank you for your patience and partnership with us during first quarter.
- We know that families continue to have challenges with employment
- We know that families continue to have challenges with childcare
- We know that families continue to try and keep their families safe
- We know that families continue to try and manage work and trying to stay up to date with their child's schoolwork and learning.
You are all amazing!
Please remember that as we continue to improve how we communicate without overloading you, we do it with the best of intention.
Thank you for respecting work hours of our teachers who also have families and lives to manage. I have asked them to set boundaries for themselves so we have teachers who are fully present and healthy for your students.
As we move forward, our next goal as a team is to make sure we continue to learn along with our students as we learn more technology in order to provide more engaging lessons. We will reach out to families who struggle to have students engage in classes.
What teachers would love your help with is speaking to your students about having their cameras on. Although it is a choice for your student and your family, it's hard to engage with students when we never see their faces or they don't participate in the chat box.
So we will be reviewing with students what participation in class looks like.
- Participate in discussions with their microphone on or in the chat box
- Completing classwork to show understanding
Thank you for your support
End of Quarter Grades
Video of Ms. Roletto explaining
- We used A,B,C and NG
- NG means "no grade"
- NG means your student may be present in class, but not completing work or participating and we don't have enough evidence to show understanding to give your child a grade.
- NG also could mean that your student is not attending a specific class
Please make sure to check in with your student or with your teacher if you have questions

Boundary Changes Information Update! IMPORTANT
As we’ve shared, the initial work focuses on schools in Southeast Portland in anticipation of the reopening of Kellogg Middle School.
The Southeast Guiding Coalition has held six meetings aimed at creating a common understanding of the Coalition’s charge and the process for developing proposals and a final recommendation.
The process is starting with a focus on grades 6-8 now, and will expand to grades PK-12 next spring.
These meetings are designed to share information and gather your input.

REVIEW
Small groups:
- Reminder that this is time to continue with work that was given or review.
- If and when small groups change based off of need, staff will communicate with families and change student schedules.
What does Asynchronous look and sound like?
- If your child has a group that happens to be asynchronous that day, there should be a communication from the teacher ahead of that and what they should expect.
- Your child can email the teacher if they have questions. Please be aware that teachers will not answer immediately as they may be performing other tasks with students as well.
Please email Ms. Roletto with any schedule questions. groletto@pps.net
