From the Principal . . .
Welcome to the 2019-20 school year at ISB! The students, staff, and families of ISB make our school a truly exceptional learning community.
We value communicating with our families and will use several avenues to share news. This newsletter will be published every other Monday and shared through email, as well as posted on our school website. Our student Social Media Team offers Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook updates. Friends of ISB (FRISB) also has a Facebook page for you to follow. In addition, our teachers and counselors use Canvas as their webpage platform. To learn more about Canvas follow this link Canvas for Parents.
We are looking forward to having you join us at two upcoming events: the ISB Family Fall Festival on Friday, September 20th from 5-7 pm and Back to School Night on Thursday, September 26th. Parking will be limited at both events, so please consider carpooling with neighbors. Remember to bring your blanket and lawn chairs to the Fall Festival. Thank you for partnering with us to support your child's success!
Warm Regards,
Jill O'Neill
2019-20 School Hours
School hours are Monday - Friday from 7:30 am to 2:05 pm.
Supervision at school is provided from 7:00 am to 2:15 pm. Students should not arrive earlier or stay beyond the supervision time unless they are attending a club meeting or an appointment has been prearranged with staff. Beginning next week the library will be open daily after school, except on Wednesdays, from 2:15 to 3:15. Students not in a supervised activity but at school after 2:15 will be asked to wait outside.
The school office is open 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.
Back to School Night
All parents/guardians are invited to join us for Back to School Night on Thursday, September 26th from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. An optional meeting will be held in the library at 5:30 pm to provide parents/guardians an opportunity to review Health curriculum. Back to School Night is an opportunity to meet your child's teachers and learn about the curriculum and expectations in each class. Your child(ren) will bring home a flyer within the next two weeks. Parking is limited so please consider carpooling with neighbors. Additional parking is available on Vincent Street. Due to limited classroom space, students should not attend.
Parking Lot Safety
Student and staff safety is very important. Drivers are asked to drive is a safe, alert, and courteous manner, recognized that we have buses, student drivers, and pedestrians in our parking lots. Please use your turn signal to communicate your intentions to other drivers and pedestrians. Reserve the use of your horn for emergencies only.
Morning Drop Off
In the morning we have two primary drop off zones for AM arrivals. Once students are dropped off in one of the zones, use a turn signal and pull away from the curb to the outside lane. This allows other drivers to pull forward in the drop zone, increasing the number of students being able to arrive simultaneously. After 7:15 am, our near bus lane will be open for arrivals as well.
Please do not drop off students from the furthest lane in the parking lot, as students would have to pass between parked cars, then navigate a lane of traffic with no crosswalks.
If you use the Blanton Street pull off, please pull all the way forward to allow multiple simultaneous drop offs. For more information, including a map, please see Morning Parking Lot Safety
Afternoon Pick Up
Our district bus transportation must leave the parking lot at 2:10 in order for bus riders to make their connections at the neighborhood high schools. We will hold other vehicles until buses have exited the parking lot. Please use the three lanes to the left of the bus lane to pick up your students. Unless there is parking lot congestion, please pull to the right until your child enters your vehicle. Wait for your child in the vehicle, rather than parking and exiting the vehicle. When you have all riders, use your turn signal to pull to the left and forward. We dismiss each row, expecting drivers to merge within their row. Please use your turn signal to communicate your readiness to merge with other drivers.
If you use the Blanton Street pull off, please pull all the way forward to allow multiple simultaneous drop offs. Do not block the bike lane or parking lot exit for buses turning right on Blanton. One tip to avoid congestion is to plan your arrival at ISB at 2:10.
PSAT Registration
Junior and Sophomore students are encouraged to sign up to take the PSAT test this fall. The PSAT is a standardized test of skills in reading, writing, math, and critical thinking. This is a National Merit Scholarship qualifying test and helps students to prepare for taking the SAT. ISB students will test on Wednesday, October 16 from 7:30 am - noon. To register you only need to submit payment of $25 to Ms. Meyer in the office (or pay online). Please see counselors Ms. Hirsch or Mrs. Muilenburg if you need a scholarship/waiver for the test fee.
Online Enrollment Verification
If you have not already done so, please verify your student's information through Online Enrollment Verification. BSD parents and guardians have the ability to verify their child(ren)'s enrollment information through the parent portal, ParentVUE. This annual paper process was formerly a part of the Back to School packet that was brought home to parents/guardians to review, update, and return to the office. Feel free to watch a helpful video to help you through the process. For more information, including FAQ’s, and helpful videos, please visit the Online Registration webpage.
Picture Day Today
Purchasing & Fees
The Beaverton School District has implemented a new Online Payment System for all schools. Using a Visa, Discover, or Mastercard debit or credit card, you may make secure online payments for your students with no transaction fees.
Schedules
Receiving School Communications
If another parent/guardian in your household would like to start receiving communications from our school as well, please ask them to contact Margaret Lusk at 503-356-3700 to update your child's record in the District’s student information system.
High School Dances & Guest Passes
Before long, homecoming season will be upon us. ISB high school students who wish to attend dances at other BSD high schools must complete and submit a Guest Pass to that school. Guest Passes require they attend the dance with a student who is enrolled at that school. Similarly, students wishing to attend a high school dance at ISB must be a guest of a current ISB high school student and submit a completed Guest Pass before being able to purchase a ticket. Typically guest passes must be received by other schools the Thursday prior to a Saturday dance and must include the signatures of the host & guest student, as well as a parent/guardian of each, and the guest student's Asst. Principal or Principal. We encourage you to plan ahead.

Student Success Act - Your Input Wanted
The Oregon Legislature passed and the Governor signed the $2 billion Student Success Act (HB 3427) in Spring 2019. This is an historic and much needed investment in K-12 schools. Beaverton could be able to access an estimated $34 million per year through a state application process.
School districts will be required to apply for funds. Districts must demonstrate engagement of the community in a needs assessment process prior to the application for funds. The needs assessment includes the District’s existing Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) and an expanded public engagement process with multiple and diverse stakeholders.
BSD has begun Phase I Community Engagement and is seeking input on what is working and what improvements are needed. Learn more and take a brief survey at https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/get-involved/student-success-act.
AVID Volunteer Tutors Needed!
AVID=Advancement Via Individual Determination
The Beaverton AVID Program teaches students the skills and behaviors necessary for academic success in high school, college and beyond.
- AVID volunteers (we call them 'tutors') work with small groups of students under the supervision of a teacher.
- Volunteers are trained to use specific strategies that help develop students’ critical thinking, literacy, and math skills.
- Volunteers are needed mainly on Tuesdays & Thursdays, and times vary depending on the school and volunteer's availability.
- Training and ongoing support provided.
- Community or Parent Volunteer Application and Background Check required.

FRISB
Welcome to the new school year!!
FRISB is excited to see another school year underway. We have a lot of fun activities planned, starting with the Fall Family Festival (formerly Community Picnic) benefitting the Class of 2020 Grad Night.
- Who: The entire ISB community
- What: Food, delish pie, music, new ISB logo stickers & magnets, Grad Night tickets and a 50/50 cash raffle!
- When: Friday, September 20, 5:00-7:00 p.m.
- Where: ISB
- Why: For the pie and music, obviously. But also to see friends, learn about school clubs and community events we have planned this year, win some prizes, and support the senior class as we kick off the Grad Night 2020 fundraising efforts.
Volunteering at ISB – We need you ALL!
We need community to help during Picture Retake Day on Oct. 25 in the morning. Please sign up on the Volunteer System.
How to volunteer?
- If you are new to ISB and/or need to check whether you are set for ISB Volunteering, please visit this page: https://app.betterimpact.com/Volunteer/CustomFields .
- If ISB is on the pull down list for “Please select an organization to update,” you are set and will start getting volunteer request emails! Please update your student info while you are on this page.
- If ISB is not on the pull down list, then please email: BSD-Update-Volunteer-Locations@beaverton.k12.or.us and ask them to add ISB.
- If you are new to volunteering at Beaverton School District, you will need to complete a background check (more information can be found here).
Looking forward to next volunteer opportunity (more info to follow):
Middle School Harvest Social on October 25 after school.
Red Envelope Fundraiser
ISB has received international recognition as being one of the top schools in the nation. Please help us maintaining the high standards of education and programming our students have come to enjoy by participating in the Red Envelope Fundraiser.
The Red Envelope is THE only fundraising event for the 2019-2020 school year at ISB. This is a simple write-a-check campaign to raise funds to support students, faculty, and staff at ISB. We are striving to reach our goal of $25,000 and 100% ISB family participation by October 4th.
Additional requests throughout the year will be focused on volunteer hours and time. We have only this one fundraiser, so please contribute! No amount is too small! Donate today! Please ask friends and family to support ISB too! Donation forms and RED ENVELOPES should have come home with your student this week.
There will be weekly raffle drawings and a celebration for the grade level with the highest participation. Envelopes turned in by the Fall Family Festival on September 20th will be entered to win additional prizes.
Please contact us FRISBboard@gmail.com with any questions.
Thank you for your support!
Grad Night 2020 Corner
Hello seniors and senior families! This space is the spot to watch for info and updates on all things Grad Night (you may or may not know - there's a crew of folks organizing a fantastic graduation after party for the Class of 2020). Here are answers to some questions you might have:
What exactly is this? Each year, at all the BSD high schools, a group of parents organize an overnight party to mark the momentous occasion of graduating high school.
How does it work? During the year we host a series of fundraisers & make all the plans for a spectacular party. After the graduation ceremony we bus the grads to a secret location where they'll have a blast hanging out and celebrating before they head off to their next adventures.
Awesome. How can I help? Great question. In a word, participate! We'll host several fundraisers this year to meet our goal of $12K (we're already 25% of the way there!) and we need all hands on deck. All options are terrific, from selling pies to donating & submitting employer matching funds to volunteering for an all-night chaperone gig - however helping fits in to your world, it's perfect!
Events to watch for:
- Grad Night Ticket Sales
- 50/50 Cash Raffle (bring cash to the Fall Family Festival!)
- Logo Sticker & Magnet Sale
- Willamette Valley Fruit Co. Pie Sale
- Bottle & Can Drive
Thanks in advance for your time and energy, and here's to a terrific year!
- Your Grad Night 2020 Committee
SchoolCafe
Nutrition Services information is easier to access this year, and we have lots of cool information to share! Click on the link below to go to SchoolCafe, and see all the things that you can do:
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/nutrition-services/meals/schoolcafe
All you need is your student’s ID number. If you don’t have that, you can call your school office
or the Meal Benefits line (503-356-3957). Here are some of your options in SchoolCafe:
- Create an account
- Apply for Meal Benefits
- View and print Meal Benefits letters
- See what items your student is getting in the cafeteria.
- Check your student’s account balance.
- View cafeteria menus
- Set up low balance alerts
- Set up auto-pay (when balance gets to an amount that YOU set, the account is replenished from your credit card)
SchoolCafe can provide amazing amounts of information!
If you do not have access to a computer, you can also apply for Meal Benefits on paper. Applications are available in every school office and cafeteria.
Remember that the 30-day Rollover Period for 2018-2019 meal benefits will end in early October. Be sure to apply TODAY so your students don’t have a lapse in benefits. Any families whose students go into “Paid” status will be responsible to pay for all meals charged in school cafeterias. Don’t let this happen to you!
If you have questions or need help, please call Laurie Bishop at Meal Benefits, (503)356-3957 or email us at NS-MealBenefits@beaverton.k12.or.us.
