Roadrunner Review
April 2017 Principal Newsletter by Erika Krohn
Principal's Message
Happy April! I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Spring Break with your dear children. I enjoyed spending quality time with my family, and I'm rested and ready for a productive and engaging 3rd trimester!
I trust that you've reviewed your child's 2nd trimester report card with your child. It's a great time to set goals with your child for the final trimester of the school year. It's all about a Growth Mindset-a belief that our most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. It's appropriate for some students to set a goal of achieving straight A's, while some students should be setting goals to improve effort and citizenship. Achieving Accelerated Reader goals is also worthy. Perhaps getting a C in math is an absolute win for your child. The point is to set realistic, achievable goals that will teach your child the most important lesson-that they have the power to improve their learning and grades.
Sincerely,
Erika Krohn, Principal
Congratulations to our PTA Award Winners!
Melanie Smith, Jennifer Wener, and Tammy Dunst were announced as PTA Honorary Service Award recipients. All 3 of these women are dedicated volunteers at our school. Melanie Smith conducted a traffic study of our parking lot which helped get a crossing guard, books and juggles the scheduling of all PTA programs, chaired the successful Color-a-thon event, greeted students in the morning at the Valet, and helps out in the classrooms. Jennifer Wener is in charge of our Book Fairs this year-a huge undertaking. She helps out at our school in classrooms on an almost daily basis. Tammy Dunst chaired our fun-filled and successful Parents' Night Out event. Much was done behind the scenes to secure donations, prepare the unique baskets, and make sure the event went off without a hitch. She is also the Yearbook Advisor which requires hours of work to prepare a memorable, attractive keepsake for our students.
Teacher Tammy Pinkerton was granted the prestigious PTA Golden Oak Award to recognize significant contributions to our students and community. She has been an active member of our PTA and dedicated teacher since the opening of Canyon Rim in 1997. She gets our teachers involved in the Teacher Auction each year. Not only has she demonstrated leadership in our PTA, she chairs the Geography Bee and Volunteer Recognition each year as well. She will be greatly missed as she retires at the end of this school year.
Anti-Bully Policy
California law (Ed Code §32261, §48900(a)(1), §48900(r)), District board policy (BP 5131), and our school rules protect students against bullying and/or cyber-bullying.
Bullying is defined as harassment of students including intimidation, ridicule, extortion, or any other verbal, written, or physical conduct that causes or threatens to cause bodily harm or emotional suffering repeatedly over time. Cyber-bullying includes transmission of communication, posting harassing messages, direct threats, social cruelty, or other harmful texts, sounds, or images on the Internet or using any other technology. (BP 5131(a)).
Here at Canyon Rim, we desire to prevent bullying by establishing a positive, collaborative school climate, and clear rules for student conduct. 1st-6th grade students are informed about the Anti-Bully Policy twice per year at Big R Assemblies with the principal. Students are taught to be "upstanders" rather than bystanders by: 1) stopping rumors whenever possible, 2) telling an adult/supervisor when you see someone being bullied, or 3) telling an adult or campus supervisor when you hear of plans to bully someone or start a fight.
All students at Canyon Rim School have a right to the following:
- A safe, secure, and peaceful school environment where you are free from bullying, threats, and harassment, either physical or emotional.
- To submit a verbal or written complaint of conduct you feel might be considered bullying to a teacher or the principal.
- To make the above complaints anonymous and without fear that your name will be divulged (it will be kept in confidence).
Students who violate District or school rules and regulations regarding bullying will be subject to progressive discipline.
