The Weekly FIRE
Flexibility, Integrity, Respect, Effort
issue 11: 01/04/2021
Welcome back Dragons!
Happy new year! I hope you all had a fun and cozy winter break and that you are rested, refreshed and ready to take on Hexter three!
As we embark on a new year, I want to invite each of you to think about what you want to do with your 2021 and how we can support you in reaching those goals. Whatever it is that you want to do with your new year, talk to us about it! Check in with your advisory teacher. Talk to your counselor. Reach out to Laura, Todd or Jesse. Give me a call or shoot me a text message. Do you have some health or fitness goals? I bet Julie has some ideas. Maybe you have been thinking about checking out GSA, BSU or one of our other groups. There’s no time like the present.
Whatever it is you are reaching for, just remember that we are here to help you do it.

Animal Guide of the Week:
-Laura Craford, RLA Social Worker
For those of you who do not know what the animal cards mean…
Each newsletter I will pull a card from my deck of animal guide cards, it is our message for the week—something we need to think about, understand or that we need to remember about ourselves or a situation. This is something that I have been doing with RLA students and staff for a while now, it’s my thing. 😊 If you ever want your own card, message me (Laura) through teams or @ (740) 240-2311 and I will send you a picture of one, just like when you would come to my office for one when we were in school!
Emu
This week at RLA we are EMUS: “This is a good time to go on a new adventure.” 2020 is out and 2021 is in…sounds like a reason for a new adventure to me! When I think about 2020, I try to remember it was not all bad, there were moments of joy and success amidst the many challenges we all faced. As 2021 begins it seems like we have an opportunity to take what we learned in 2020 and turn it into a new adventure as suggested by the EMU card. “Dismiss the voice that says, Yeah, sounds good, but I can’t do that because…” This kind of thinking limits us, keeps us in the safe zone instead of stretching us outside of our comfort zones where we try new things, discover the unfamiliar, and listen to our heart of hearts—the small voice in our head that pushes us to just do it. So, as we begin the new year 2021 let’s think of it as a new adventure where we try new things, push ourselves outside of our comfort zone, and continue to persevere through the challenges ahead. I can’t wait to see (and hear about) what everyone does!

Weekly Wellness Tip: A new year, a new you? Maybe.....
I love New Year's Eve! The potential for a new year, a new start, new resolutions! Every year through we wake up as the same person with all our good and bad habits. It is a great time to make change, but often we try to make huge change that happens all at once. That just doesn't really work. Instead try one, small change.
Instead of saying "I am going to get into shape this year"; Say "I will work out for 30 minutes three times a week."
Instead of saying "I will pass all my classes this year"; Say " I will spend one hour each school day on class work and checking in with teachers."
Instead of saying "I will be a better person"; Say "I will reach out to my friends more, listen more and share more."
You may forget about a resolution, mess up or skip a day, but you have another day right around the corner to try again.
So, to wrap things up….
- Acknowledge 2020
- Reset at home this winter and come back stronger
- Focus on a goal or even just one word and work towards becoming the version of yourself that you want to be.
I bet you never heard of Ynes Mexia
-Sue Rosemarin, Science
Ynes Enriquetta Julietta Mexia was one of the most successful botanists and female plant collectors of her time and she did not begin her career until she was 55 years old. She was accomplished not only in the number of plants she collected but also in the number of miles she traveled. Mexia spent 13 years traveling the Americas, often alone, collecting thousands of plants on her way. She was a fierce conservationist and was an early pioneer in fighting to preserve the redwood forests of Northern California. She was assertive, brave, and not afraid to challenge racism, sexism, ageism and more in her impressive and amazing career.
The Science Behind COVID-19 Prevention
Vaccines, ever heard of them? What about the term "herd immunity"? Ever heard of herd immunity? 😂😅😭 English is a weird language...
The news has been flooded with the BioNTech and Pfizer vaccine for COVID-19. This is great news for getting us ultimatly back into the classroom and allowing us to see our friends and loved ones without putting them at risk. But what is a vaccine? Some of you may have hear rumors (and I'll be up front) myths about the "dangers of vaccines". Thus my, "The Science Behind COVID-19" post is about vaccines. How do they work? How are they dangerous? Why is it important that we in society get vaccinated? Why should you take the COVID-19 vaccine if/when you are able? I hope that this weeks video will help to address some of these questions:

2. Netflix vs. Hulu vs. TikTok: Monday, 2pm on ZOOM
What’s better Netflix or Hulu? But really TikTok is where it’s at! Come to this group to discuss all things streaming and social media and everywhere in between. We hope to build a safe space where people can talk about their favorite shows, movies, and accounts they like to follow, and maybe watch a few videos! We might also get into ways to relax, deal with stress, and balance time management so you don’t end up binging on shows until 3am every night, just on the weekends ;)

3. Arts & Crafts: Thursday, 3:30pm
Arts and Crafts Group with Jesse will be Thursday at 3:30pm over zoom. However, we may be able to run a second arts and crafts group in the future. Jesse will be coordinating with students to drop off supplies as well as provide the zoom link before Thursday. For questions, call Jesse: 503-318-2905.
If you’ve already signed up for a group, check your student email and you will get a reminder and link to join the group on the first day.
