Message from the Principal
Hello parents,
As January is coming to a close, we turn our attention to some important upcoming assessments.
The second marking period will end on the 30th. Grades are being finalized so it is important to check PowerSchool and to speak with your child to ensure that there are no missing assignments. Homework Club and the 21st Century Program are available after school for students to get some assistance with their work. Further, Advisory during the day is always there for a child to speak with a teacher, counselor or to get additional help. Please have your child afford themselves of these supports to ensure their second marking period grades are where you expect them to be.
Next week, interim assessments will also be given. These tests help measure the amount of learning your child has accomplished over the course of this school year in each subject. Aligned to the standards, these assessments give our teachers a clear picture of progress for individual students and the class as a whole.
If anyone has any questions regarding grades or assessments, feel free to reach out to individual teachers or your child's counselor; they would be happy to help!
Have a fantastic weekend!

Social Studies with Ms. Ruhl
This week, students were working on a DBQ (Document Based Question) about the Columbian Exchange. They began by analyzing various primary and secondary sources, such as maps of trade routes and the personal accounts of European explorers and indigenous peoples. After analyzing all of the documents, the students had to decide whether they thought the Columbian Exchange had a more positive or negative impact on humanity. The students wrote an essay arguing their position, using evidence from the sources to support their response. They participated in a series of peer reviews to edit their work, and concluded their final paper with a brief roundtable discussion with their peers to share their ideas!

Re: SAT Prep - Reading and Math Course
We have enlisted Ivy Bound Test Prep to tailor a convenient SAT prep classes for our students at a reduced price. The Ivy Bound Instructors have a zeal for teaching teens, know the test well, and have scored in the top 1% on the SAT or ACT. While not an endorsement, this is a heads-up to a good opportunity over three Wednesday afternoons.
We've selected Ivy Bound because of its strong reputation, its thoroughness, and its top 1% instructor standard. Also, we happen to like that it's still a small company: Ivy Bound's Founder and Lead Instructor, Mark Greenstein, still speaks personally with every student in the program who wishes to call the Help Line for SAT Writing prep each month, and communicates with parents by e-mail and Sunday conference calls.
Through our partnership, we have a significant discount. For three sessions, you will be charged just $50 (Regular tuition for a short class is $450).
Ivy Bound Director, Mark Greenstein, will also be giving a short half-hour parent seminar on the final day of class, “Know the SAT / How to Get the Most from the Course”.
For the Class of 2021, Ivy Bound is committed to helping throughout junior year, with e-mail reinforcement to extend skills and supplements for vocabulary absorption. Our goal is to have students crush the SAT on March 25 when we host an SAT School Day session at no cost for all Juniors, but be ready to test again May 2 and/or June 2.

1. What is your "go to" song for the journey to school?
My go to song for driving into school is Vivir Mi Vida, by Marc Anthony. The song’s lyrics question why the listener prefers to dwell on the past rather than focus on the future and all the good that the future has to offer. Besides there is no greater way to start your day then by listening to Latin percussion music, it puts a smile on your face.2. Do you have a favorite saying or quote that you try to live by?
My favorite saying goes hand in hand with my music selection and it is, “The best is YET to come.” While life is pretty good right now in this moment, the future has so much to offer and that it will only get better. I am an optimist by nature and thinking about the future makes me happy.
3. What is one of your hidden talents?
I really do not have any hidden talents to speak of, except that I make an exceptional Flan
custard.
4. What are your "trapped on a desert island" books or movies?
If I was trapped on a desert island, I would want my favorite book, Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger. The protagonist, Holden Caulfield, always reminds me to be true about myself rather than change who I am when I walk into the classroom or as Caulfield would say “act like a teacher” . My movies would have to be The Thin Man series. These are black and white movies about detectives, murders, and mayhem but with comic relief.
5. If you could take your students on a field trip to anywhere in the world, where would you take them?
The Grand Canyon National Park, in Arizona. Once you see the magnitude of this canyon you realize how small you are in this universe.
6. What is one piece of advice you would give to your students?
Persevere, persevere, and persevere some more.
