Teaching and Learning Hub
October 2015 Newsletter
Welcome to this month's edition!
As the academic year gets into full swing, October looks set to be a busy month for teaching and learning at City College....
This Month's Tutorials
- This month's tutorials focus on the following theme: Black History Month. Visual and Performing Arts have provided the resources for a tutorial to use with your students, which you can find on the Teaching and Learning Hub here: http://citybit.southampton-city.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=1498§ion=14
- Jose has also created a session on e-safety to be delivered in tutorials this month, which you can find here: http://citybit.southampton-city.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=1498§ion=14
- Please also remember that you can book additional sessions for your tutorials which can take place whilst you are delivering 1:1's with students. Again, all of the details can be found using the above links.
Embedding English and Maths
Starter activities lend themselves perfectly to opportunities to embed English and Maths in your lessons. Use the links below to find resources you can begin to use immediately in the classroom.
NEW: Coaching For All Teachers
We are now offering regular times where the Teaching and Learning Hub will be staffed by either a Teaching and Learning Coach or a Maths/English specialist. During these times (see schedule below) teachers are welcome to drop in to receive support. Times are spread throughout the week to try and ensure that there is a suitable time for everybody to access this new service.
Who are the Teaching and Learning Coaches?

Jo teaches Beauty, English and Maths and this will be her fourth year as a Teaching and Learning coach. Jo's strengths lie in being able to understand a lesson from a student's perspective and therefore suggest strategies to improve their engagement and progress.

Developmental Observations Schedule
Teams being observed in October
Week beginning:
- 5th October - Construction Crafts and Electrical
- 12th October - Visual and Performing Arts
- 19th October - Literacy and Numeracy
Remember...
- If you would like to receive training on how to observe, contact Hayley Ryan who will organise for you to participate in a joint lesson observation.
- There may be more than one person who comes to observe you. This will either be because one of the observers is in training, or because 20% of our observations are conducted jointly so that we can ensure standardisation.
Themed Learning Walks
Week Beginning 12th October: #1 Knowing the Students/Attendance
This themed learning walk will take place throughout this week. Observers will be looking at how well teachers are planning learning based upon their assessment and understanding of the students' needs.
We also have a new system of feedback from our themed learning walks: observers will leave you a 'calling card' if they visit your lesson letting you have some feedback on what they saw.
Remember that the purpose of our themed learning walks is to identify and then share best practice across the college.
Lesson Planning
The Teaching and Learning Hub features a range of different methods of planning (lesson plans) so that teachers are able to use the format that best suits them. We would like to grow this bank of resources, so if you have a sample of a lesson plan that you use, please email a copy to Hayley Ryan or one of the Teaching and Learning Coaches. We can then add them all onto the TLH to share good practice.
Equality and Diversity...
“At bottom every man knows well enough that he is a unique being, only once on this earth; and by no extraordinary chance will such a marvelously picturesque piece of diversity in unity as he is, ever be put together a second time.”
Friedrich Nietzsche.
