Principal Leander's RCS News
We believe in deeper thinking innovative students
RCS Collage of learning
This week at RCS I wanted to focus on a collage of learning. Generally, I like to watch the implementation of strategies that we have learned about how to make our kids better readers. In grade 2, I was able to have most of the class share their vacation journal entires with me. Many of the students ventured to far away lands, while others enjoyed the last of the winter break activities, such as sledding, skiing, fishing, and even 1 student went on a cold weather camp out. In third grade, I watched the students construct large posters to better understand and be able to compare the ways fractions are developed, by going from a whole shape to the part that equals the fraction. In fourth grade, I was able to watch the students be involved in a fantastic game of capture the flag. We have all heard about the benefits of chess and teaching kids to think ahead and strategize. I would say the same things happened when they were playing capture the flag. The students would strategically move from one safe area to another and discuss with their teammates their next moves. In fifth grade, the students in math developed a deeper understanding of surface area, challenged me to an exponent challenge (which I will post in this Smore), and continued working on PEMDAS. With Mrs. K., the fifth graders began the history unit on explorers. The students were challenged with an anticipation chart to identify what they thought they understood about Christopher Columbus. I think they were very surprised to find out what they thought they knew compared to what was real! Our grade 6 students were enticed to read some new novels that Mr. Snell had purchased for them over vacation. He peaked their interest and they were practically jumping out of their seats to add the new titles into their book bags. The students in first grade couldn't wait for Wednesday, as they knew something special was going to happen. Mrs. Drouin had the students predict with their popcorn anticipation marker where they thought popcorn from an open air-popper would land. In Kindergarten, I was able to treat myself by reading a new book to the class! Mrs. Willhite does such a great job sharing her readers. Every week the students have the chance to showcase their new reading books and skills by traveling around RCS and reading with so many of us. Thanks for sharing your Kindergarteners!!!

Kylie goes above and beyond!
Over vacation one of our very talented sixth grade students spent her time creating a comic book. I could not be more proud of her writing, with a specific focus on characters and artistic drawing. This book wins a gold star! Way to go Kylie and thanks for showcasing your work.
Mrs. Hopkins creates excitment during indoor recess.
Wow the cold weather does not seem to want to break. Fortunately for RCS, on these super cold days we have a very creative staff. Mrs. Hopkins excited every class with the parachute and from there on simply fun, fun, and more, fun! Great job...
Books to read :)
As many of you know, I love to read books to kids and not just my own. Reading to kids every night provides a great opportunity for us, as parents, to connect and really check in with the people we care about most. During one of our readers workshop sessions, I noticed a wide variety of new books and decided to take a picture so I could remember a few of the titles. Sharing is caring, so I thought I would share the picture with all of you.
