News from Sundling Junior High
February 26, 2021
Letter from the Principal
Hello Sundling Families,
It is hard to believe, but we will be wrapping up the 3rd quarter of school in just a few short weeks, Friday, March 12th to be exact. 3rd Quarter final grades will be posted on Infinite Campus on Friday, March 19th. With that said, our 8th graders are one step closer in the tranisition to high school, while our 7th graders will be thinking about the move to 8th grade, and becoming the leaders of our school. Students should continue to stay focused, and set goals for the 4th quarter of school, ending the year on a positive note both academically and socially/emotionally. We have accomplished some amazing things during difficult and unique situations this school year, and pushed through the day to day challenges of junior high school, but still have work to do until we end in May.
I wanted to take an opportunity this month to say good bye and thank you to our amazing school secretary, Colleen Butterly. Colleen will be retiring from Sundling and District 15 in mid-March. I hired Colleen as the office clerical almost 10 years ago, and moved her to secretary a few years after that. She has been the long standing face and voice in our school office. She has supported thousands of WRS staff, students, and families in so many ways during her time in our school, and she will be dearly missed. THANK YOU COLLEEN for your years of service to our community! We wish you all of the best in retirment! You will ALWAYS be a Paladin!
As always, thanks for your continued support of our school, students, and staff!
Sincerely,
Jason Dietz
Principal

5Essentials Survey
Each school year, teachers, parents, and students have an opportunity to share their views and perceptions about their school by participating in the 5Essentials Survey. 5Essentials survey information is a valuable tool used by your school to identify priority areas for improvement. As a parent, the 5Essentials survey is an opportunity to share your thoughts on the school's effectiveness.
The 5Essentials Survey will be administered online. The survey takes about 15 minutes to complete, is anonymous and asks questions about five areas that are related to important student outcomes, including improved attendance and learning. The five areas focused on are:
Effective Leaders
Collaborative Teachers
Involved Families
Supportive Environments
Ambitious Instruction
The survey is managed by the University of Chicago and the school does not have access to your identity or survey responses. The 5Essentials Survey window opens on February 2, 2021 and closes March 5, 2021. To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/

Notes from the Nurse
As much as we would all like our lives and the lives of our students to return to normal, our area is still dealing with the spread of the Covid 19 virus and the illness that it causes. Thank you for working with the school to keep in-person students healthy and by being so conscientious when your student is not feeling well by keeping them at home.
The school district is continuing to follow the guidelines of the Illinois Department of Public Health by wearing masks, allowing for social distancing and by offering ways to keep hands and surfaces as clean as possible.
Part of this plan requires the nurse to determine when a student who has been sick may return to school and what medical documentation is needed. This applies to students who are sent home from school with symptoms but also to those students called in on the absence line with any symptom similar to Covid. The Sundling Health Office wants to work with you to get your child the care he/she might need and also to allow them to return as soon as it is safe for everyone.
The Health Office is able to share these guidelines with you and also direct you to resources in the community for PCR Covid testing should you need to get your student or another family member tested. When one member of a household is having symptoms, it affects all the other members who live there too since this is such a contagious virus. The results of that testing determine what happens next and are a very important step in your student returning to school.

Notes from our WRS PTA President
Greetings Paladin Families,
Spring is on it's way, finally! It's so nice to see the sun shining, as we begin to thaw out from our harsh winter.
We're hoping you can help our Palatine community. Partners for Our Communities (POC) has reached out to all D15 PTA's asking for donations. Sundling PTA will be collecting STORE BOUGHT, NUT FREE "grab and go snacks" (individually wrapped) There will be a marked collection box in the vestibule starting Monday, March 1st. Please consider dropping off a some fun goodies to share with POC, OR, send your snacks with your student(s) to school, they can give to their homeroom teacher. Please mark "For POC Collection" The snack drive will end on Friday, March 19th. Thank you so much for help.
Our PTA Nominating Committee is currently searching for our next President Elect. If you know of any incoming 7th grade parent, who would be a good candidate, please share their name and contact info with us. I want to emphasize PTA President at Sundling is not as demanding, time consuming, or stressful - and is much more laid back as opposed to PTA President at an elementary level. So, put your thinking caps on and share some contenders with us. Thank you!
We have some fun fundraisers coming up in March and in April. Please see more detailed information in this newsletter.
As always, thank you for supporting the Sundling PTA.
