recent happenings in 4th grade - February 1 - February 5

Day of Service

Our class will go to Truman Medical Center to participate in inter-generational activities on February 26th. Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to go with us! Other grade levels are still needing donations if you are willing and able to donate. The following donations are requested: gently used or new shoes, 1 yard of fleece, fabric scissors, hand towels, full sized shampoo bottles and canned food items.

This week in ELA we continued making inferences and writing informational pieces. Next week we will use our inferences to understand theme as well as finish our informational pieces. Many students are working on a piece of writing to enter into the Young Author's contest! We also continued working on our PALS skills. With 22 students reading and coaching at the same time, it can seem a little loud. The hardest part for our class is to keep our voices low so that all groups can hear each other.

Fractions continue... please check in with your student about what he is learning about fractions. We have learned about equivalent fractions, comparing fractions and we will begin adding fractions with common denominators.

Be sure to continue working on multiplication facts! We have made a lot of progress since the beginning of the year and are just over halfway to our 4th grade goal of 80 facts in 4 minutes. We made a big gain this week! One student said to me, "Wow, I've been practicing and I got a lot better!" Practice does help!

Science/Social Studies

We spent all week reviewing Earth Systems (rocks) and took the test today. Many students did very well! Our class average was 79%. Next week we will begin our next social studies unit on Government.

If you would like to send valentines to school, you may do so on or before next Friday, February 12th. We have 22 students. If your child needs a list of students to be sure to include them all, please let me know. We will be making a bag to hold our valentines in class. NO candy or edible items may be included on valentines. Some items/tokens such as tattoos, stickers, pencils can be given with valentines, but not candy.
