The Purpose

Bring research into the 21st Century by finding the most accessible technologies for distributing and communicating research. Innovation only happens when you break the conceptual limitations of the existing system. OpenBookBag is an exploratory concept that provides a new platform for envisioning what peer review and sharing could be in a future that is more open, creative, and collaborative.

The Problem

People are trapped in the academic system, and people are locked out of it. The open-source research movement is at a point where there is significant momentum, but we can't continue to work in the same system that has been established. Perhaps creating more open-source journals isn't the path that should be taken. The game doesn't have to be played.

The Conceptual Solution

OpenBookBag is a concept platform for an alternative peer to peer sharing and review mechanism that socializes the solitary act of literature review, while also providing an open channel for “boosting” popular reading. OpenBookBag combines hardware and software using mesh networking through WiFi, cellular, and Bluetooth for direct file sharing and interaction. This does not need the internet for functionality, but is enhanced by the internet for maximum impact.


There are two main aspects to this platform, which revolve around a software solution in the form of a smartphone application (and a companion web app for data analytics) and a hardware solution providing a repository in the form of the "internet of things."

The Software Solution

The software side provides a channel for viewing and downloading articles from connected open-source repositories stored in other individuals' smartphones or within a device (such as a light pole or park bench). All of these articles are uploaded by an author who has granted a specific license for open access that will allow it to be shared and used across devices. Author's can track, using the companion web app, the movement of their articles across disciplines, universities, countries, etc to visualize the access of their articles across multiple levels. The software solution will also allow users to "boost" articles that they don't fully understand technically, but are interested in learning more about. These "boosts" will be accumulated on individual articles and will let the author know that there is popular interest in a vernacular discussion of the subject of that article.

Imagine....

.....attending conferences, where everyone's research is available for immediate download while you interact with the author. Then imagine, after the conference, being able to go online to a companion web app to see the networks that your articles access, to different departments, to different disciplines, to different countries.

The Hardware Side

The hardware solution goes beyond the smartphone. This platform can be embedded into everyday objects, and in effect turns any object into a repository for articles that can be downloaded by anyone in the vicinity and anyone can "boost" an article stored within that repository as well.

Imagine...

.....walking down a campus path beside the mechanical engineering department, and as you pass by you can browse a repository of mechanical engineering faculty-related articles stored in and distributed from a light pole on your OpenBookBag smartphone app. You might be an artist, but something in an article's abstract catches your eye that you think would be useful for your own network. "Boost" that article via your smartphone application and let the author knows that there are people who would love to read his article in popular vernacular that can be applied in everyday life.
