A Message from our Principal
It was wonderful to see so many of you at our Annual Back to School Night on September 12th. Nearly 400 families were represented! Your active engagement in our school programs is integral to the success of each of our students. We hope you truly enjoyed visiting your child's classrooms and having the opportunity to meet with teachers. Know that we are each here to both serve and support you and we are beyond committed to supporting every child in achieving success!
This first newsletter of the year is dedicated to informing you about upcoming events at MLK as well to share how we demonstrate what we value most here at MLK- a focus on Teaching and Learning. We hope that this newsletter will be a welcome addition to the variety of resources that you have available to support your child. We are beyond enthusiastic about the potential for partnership with every parent on behalf of every amazing child who is a member of the MLK community.
As we enter the fall season with it's crisp and fresh air, we hope you will welcome the fresh new ideas that will be presented to you in effort to get and keep our MLK Cobras on the trajectory toward College and Career Readiness. We welcome your perspectives and insight toward this end and can't wait to collaborate with you to support our vision for a greater MLK!
Best,
Mrs. Floyd-Cooper

Bullying Prevention Month
MLK will join schools around the world in support of bullying prevention by offering lessons to students during homeroom. Additionally, on October 12th, MLK will have a Unity Day in honor of kindness, acceptance and inclusion. All students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt with their uniform pants. Please ask your child about what they've learned about bullying throughout the month.
MLK: A PREMIER AVID SCHOOL!
Under the leadership of Ms. Dana Cohen, we work collaboratively toward AVID’s goal to prepare all students in our school for college, starting with the core elective class and expanding schoolwide. This is well aligned with the PGCPS Goal to ensure students are College and Career Ready.
Through the AVID Elective class, we target students in the academic middle, who have the desire to go to college and are capable of completing rigorous curriculum using the will to work hard. In the AVID Elective, students are routinely required to enroll in their school’s toughest courses, such as honors or accelerated classes.
School wide AVID transforms the leadership, systems, instruction, and culture of a school, ensuring college readiness for all students. AVID impacts students throughout the school when trained teachers use AVID strategies to influence the academic and behavioral skills of their students. During this school year, MLK teachers will collaborate to focus on the following two strategies : (1)Use of Cornell Notes- a systematic format for condensing and organizing notes and (2) incorporation of WICOR strategies: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration , Organization, and Reading to Learn. Be on the look out for your child's use of these strategies as we go throughout the year.
