libel- a published false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation; a written defamation.
slander- the action or crime of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person's reputation.
John Peter Zenger- He accused the government of rigging elections and allowing the French enemy to explore New York harbor. It accused the governor of an assortment of crimes and basically labeled him an idiot.
1st Amendment- Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances
PHOTOJOURNALISM- this links back because journalists are now allowed to speak publicly and print without being oppressed by the government.
