Riverside Community Connection
Week of October 9th
First Annual Bear Creek at Riverside Celebration Week!
Everyone had a great day sharing the experience of looking deeply at our big backyard here at Riverside. Students were able to circulate through interactive learning stations that focused on nature and led by experts and passionate learners.
It is difficult to articulate our thanks and the true weight of your impact on our school community, but hopefully you can see the joy, love, learning and connections that the day brought. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

Teacher Highlights from the Week:
"I just think the different activities that the kids had never experienced before was great because it brought these concepts into their world."
"I was so impressed to see how the high school students were able to connect with our students. They were so kind and willing to share their knowledge"
"I loved the variety of different enriching opportunities."
"Canoeing was a huge highlight!"
"I loved that the kids were given a tactile experience with each expert."
"One student explained the groundwater model. He talked about how the water and dye moved through the sand, and that it then flowed into the creek and made the creek flow. He thought it was fascinating..."

Mural Project Grant Presentation
Rochester Area Foundation invited two people from our school to present at their grant breakfast. Here is a video of that day. We are so proud of our student leader, Aaron who presented at this event.
The Riverside Mural Project has also received a grant from THINK Bank, SEMAC and Community Education. More highlights coming.

Hy-Vee Food Drive
On the weekend Riverside and Mayo High School set up a food drive at Hy-Vee. What we did is Mrs. Casper got papers with a wishlist and we handed them out to customers. We talked to each customer, saying things like, "We are helping out our Resource Rooms." Then some people sat at the table near the exit to collect the food. We got over 100 things and over $100 to buy things our resource room still needs. Now we will see kids walking out of the school with food. Not kids walking out with no food. What's better?
That is what I did last weekend.

Refrigerator Funded by Public Health
Thanks to SHIP (Statewide Health Improvement Partnership), we now have a small refrigerator and can accept fresh food donations. We have had generous donations like eggs, yogurt and cheese from Channel One Food Bank and other friends of Riverside.
Favorite overheard refrigerator quote from a student: "Ohhhhh, you even got the good cheese!"
