Second Steps Social Skill Curriculum Week 4!
Kindergarten and First Grade: Self-Talk for Staying on Task and Learning - Self-talk means talking to yourself out loud in a quiet voice or inside your head. Self-talk helps you focus and maintain attention.
Second Grade: Being Assertive - Being assertive means asking for what you want or need in a calm and firm voice. Being assertive is a respectful way to get what you want or need.
Third Grade: Planning to Learn - Making a plan can help you be a better learner. A plan is good if the order makes sense. It's simple, and you can do it.
Fourth Grade: Respecting Similarities and Differences - People can have similar or different feelings about the same situation. Being able to notice and then understand others' feelings is an important part of empathy.
Fifth Grade: Predicting Feelings - Being able to predict how what you do or say might make other people feel is respectful and will help you get along better with others.
**Reinforce, recognize with specific positive feedback frequently and in the moment.

SAEBRS Screening - Must Be Completed by October 2
Representatives from the University of Missouri are once again partnering with our school to help us with some of our kids that are struggling socially, academically, and/or behaviorally. They will spend a brief period of time with us on October 9 to discuss results.
Therefore, they must have all data prior to October 2. This will take a little bit of time to work through your students, but hopefully the benefits in the end of identifying students for additional help will pay off. Thank you so much for taking time to do this. If you have any trouble accessing the link below, please let Leigh Anne know. Thanks!

Instructional Compass: Guiding Learning Tips/Points
What is the purpose of guided reading?
Teachers select books that children can read with about 90 percent accuracy. Children can understand and enjoy the story because it’s accessible to them through their own strategies, supported by the teacher’s introduction. They focus on meaning but use problem-solving strategies to figure out words they don’t know, deal with difficult sentence structure, and understand concepts or ideas they have never before encountered in print.
Guided reading gives children the chance to apply the strategies they already know to new text. The teacher provides support, but the ultimate goal is independent reading.

I would love to come help set reading goals for students. Please sign up for a time that I can come collect data on a struggling student(s) so that we can brainstorm some strategies together.
