February 12

From the principal

Hello PCS Friends and Families,

I hope that everyone has a restful and enjoyable February Vacation week! The students, parents, and staff have ALL been working so hard, please rest up and enjoy the time away! Happy Valentine's Day to one and all. The school will be open between 8:00 am and noon Tuesday through Friday over vacation. Please call if you need anything.

Please find some important information below regarding recent news at PCS along with upcoming events. This school year has been anything but typical, but the staff at PCS have certainly worked hard to provide high quality education for the students of Petersham Center School. A great deal of thanks also goes out to the parents who have supported their children's learning at home during a global pandemic. We are thankful for the the parents and all of their hard work!

Mr. Glazier

Today was day 100!! Woot, woot!!

Big picture

Thank you, Mr. O'Connor

Mr. O'Connor has stepped away from PCS after several years as our grade 5 and 6 math/science teacher. We were fortunate to have Mr. O'Connor for this time as he was a fantastic teacher who did great things for us. I'd like to wish Mr. O'Connor the best of luck in his new position, thank you for your service to the community of PCS.

A Few Reminders--

1. Please be reminded that the school doors do not open until 8:10. We don't have staff on duty to monitor students who arrive early. If you are dropping off your children in the morning, they must stay with you in the car until the doors open at 8:10. Thank you for understanding this request, we are working hard to keep the kids safe.

2. Please remember that our Kindergarten through second grade classrooms are nut free. Please refrain from sending any nut products to school for snacks or lunch. Thank you.

3. Very Important: If your child is going to be absent from in-person learning or will be unable to participate in remote learning, please call the school and notify Mrs. J in the front office. We will be calling families if their child is absent from school or is absent from the remote morning meeting. Daily attendance is marked based on students participation at morning meeting, so please call between 7:30 and 8:30am. Thank you.

Chromebook Collection and Maintenance

We are collecting all of the student chromebooks on Friday, February 12th for an inventory and much needed maintenance. We will call all families during the middle of next week to let them know when the chromebooks will be ready for pickup. Students in Cohort A will be issued their chromebook when they return on Monday the 22nd, but we will set up some time for Cohort B students to pick up their chromebooks before Monday in preparation for their remote learning time. Please be sure to email me or call with questions.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration for the 2021-2022 school year is open and ongoing. If you live in Petersham and your child is turning 5 before August 31st, they are eligible for kindergarten this fall. If you are an existing school choice family and you have a child eligible for kindergarten you must complete a school choice application and submit it asap. The school committee has historically accepted school choice siblings before other school choice applicants, but it's important for us to know in the next few weeks as the planning process has begun. As always, please reach out to the office with any questions.

MCAS (Slight) Update...

Here is the most recent information on MCAS testing:

Grades 3-8:

ELA April 5--May 7

Math/Science April 26--May 28

**Actual testing dates for students will be set by the principal in the upcoming weeks.

The Department of Education has released some preliminary guidance on the 2021 spring MCAS. They have announced that all students in grades 3-6 will take MCAS this spring. However, they have stated that it will be an abbreviated test. They are planning to shorten the length of the test by about half the number of questions. They are still planning for us to administer the assessment during the April/May timeframe, but a schedule has been released. I will post more information when it becomes available.

The purpose of SpedPac is to provide a voice and give support for parents of children with special needs. We work with R.C Mahar Regional, Orange Elementary School, and Petersham Center Schools to help ensure that children get the services and support they need to develop to their full potential. All parents, teachers, and community members are welcome and encouraged to participate. The more voices we have, the more we can accomplish. We need your help.
