Swansboro High School
May 10, 2020
We hope our weekly message finds you and your families staying well. It was a busy week at Swansboro High School as we recognized our Class of 2020 spring athletes on Thursday night and began planning graduation activities. A special thank you today to our athletic directors and Emerald Owl Productions for making the athletic recognition ceremony a special night. Congratulations to our Skills USA team who also achieved the rank of Quality Chapter this week.
Onslow County Schools announced on May 6, 2020 that graduation ceremonies will move forward with a two-part plan that includes a virtual ceremony and individual school celebrations and presentations of diplomas.
Our virtual ceremony will be recorded on May 28, 2020 and will be broadcast on the district’s YouTube channel at 7:00 pm on Friday, June 12, 2020. Families will be able to join in a shared graduation experience and loved ones who are not able to be here due to travel restrictions, health concerns or military deployment will be able to view the graduation ceremony.
Swansboro High School will work with a graduation celebration committee to honor the Class of 2020. The committee will be comprised of our class officers, student body president, Valedictorian, Salutatorian, teachers, parents and key community members. This committee will utilize graduation celebration guidance provided by Governor Cooper to plan the celebration. It is important for the community to note that while options will be explored, we must remain in compliance with North Carolina guidelines for mass gathering regulations.
Presentations of diplomas will occur on our campus the week of June 15, 2020. Students will be scheduled to arrive in predetermined and specifically timed waves to arrive on our campus and collect their diplomas. Currently, no more than ten (10) individuals are permitted to gather however we will continue to monitor North Carolina guidelines for mass gathering regulations and will provide more information in the coming weeks.
The week of June 1, 2020 will be an important week at Swansboro High School. We will begin transitioning from core instruction to supplemental instruction on Monday, June 1, 2020. Supplemental instructional materials will be available on teacher web-pages for extension, enrichment and review. These activities will not be collected or graded and will also be made available in print for any student or parent who requests a copy. Your teachers will share more information about these available resources in the coming weeks.
We will also begin collecting laptops and other instructional materials on June 4, 2020. Information on our collection schedule will also be posted in the coming weeks.
And finally, we will host our teacher appreciation week June 1-5, 2020. Students are encouraged to make posters and cards for our staff that can be brought by at the end of May. We would love to welcome teachers back to our building with notes of encouragement and appreciation from our students and parents.
In closing today, parents should note that Governor Cooper approved a plan for the 20/21 school year to start on Monday, August 17, 2020. Onslow County Schools is working on a revised school calendar and we will share that as soon as it becomes available.
