English 8 Update
The 8th grade English classes are embarking upon their narrative writing unit this month in which students have the option of writing personal narratives or fictional stories. Students who choose to write true stories from their lives also have the exciting opportunity to enter a global narrative writing contest being put on by The New York Times. Details of the contest can be found here. How amazing would it be to have one of our very own Cardinal Heights writers published on the website of such a big name in the writing industry?
Math Corner
To be successful in mathematics, students need to develop the ability to reason mathematically. To do so, students need to think about what they already know and then connect this knowledge to the new ideas they are learning. Many students are not used to the idea that what they learned yesterday or last week will be connected to today’s lesson. When students understand that connecting prior learning to new ideas is a normal part of their education, they will be more successful in mathematics. Your student can maximize their learning by:
Actively contributing in whole class and study team discussions.
Explaining what he has learned to someone else.
Completing all assigned problems and turning in assignments in a timely manner.
Checking and correcting problems on assignments (usually with their study partner or team) based on answers and solutions provided in class and online.
Asking for help when needed from a study partner, team, and/or teacher.
Attempting to provide help when asked by other students.
Taking notes and using his/her Toolkit or Learning Log when recommended by the teacher or the text.
Keeping a well-organized notebook.
Not distracting other students from the opportunity to learn.
Ask your student to teach you some math that they feel they have mastered, or are particularly proud of. Or ask your student to show you some class work from last week. This will give them an opportunity to feel proud of their work, and it will give you an opportunity to assist in their learning. By giving your student the opportunity to explain their thinking, you are encouraging them to be more confident, use new vocabulary, and identify any confusion they may have. Also, by explaining their thinking to someone else, they are making that knowledge clearer for themselves.
8th Grade Science Shout-Out
The 8th grade science students have hit the ground running with their study of Weather and Climate Systems. The students have been busy conducting at least one experiment every class. In October, the students will begin the month with a study of how the Earth’s Oceans play a significant role in Earth’s weather patterns and events.
Recently the students conducted an experiment that represented the Water Cycle on a small scale. The students were successful in simulating that while water changes state in a closed system, the total amount of water remains the same.
Students are able to access course information on the 8th grade science website: http://www.tinyurl.com/science8chums
We encourage you to check it out, bookmark it or make it a favorite!
Happy Fall,
Ms. Pletz, Ms. Perkins, Mrs. Kademan, and Mrs. Harmon
Hungry? Love Food? Come to Our Restaurant!
Mrs.Livingston’s Travel and Restaurant classes will be hosting several restaurants coming up!
Our first restaurant will be taking place Thursday, 10/17 from 10:15-1:15 in room 504. My Super Saucin’ 1A class is currently working on their concepts so I am sure it will be something fabulous. Friday, 11/1 will be my Cardinal Caterer’s 1B class restaurant. Still working on the theme for that date also.
We would love to welcome you and have you come enjoy our restaurant. We will have a reasonably priced menu including soups, salads, main entrees, sides, and yummy desserts. Make a reservation to dine in or carry out. I will send out an online form to you the week prior so you are able to see what will be available. The students work very hard to design and execute their restaurants so we would love you to take the time to stop by and check out room 504!
Please RSVP with Missy Livingston at:
1st Restaurant-Thursday, 10/17 10:15-1:15
2nd Restaurant-Friday, 11/1 10:15-1:15

Skills USA is Back!
This year the SkillsUSA club is ready to work it! We meet every other (usually the 2nd & 4th) Wednesday in Room 206 (Mr. Murray's room). We do team building, leadership, social activities and projects. Please encourage you 8th or 9th grader to join us to find out more. This year's officers are Katherine Martinez, Jake Thering, Saanvi Kandarelli, Ella Griffin and Samantha Gebert.
This past summer Kat, Ella, and Jake qualified for the National Conference/Competition in Louisville, Kentucky! Thats a BIG deal! Then, they brought home silver and a whole new mindset: “hard work pays off”. So… props to them - they are really hard-working and deserve it. They, as well as other skills members, are ready and willing to answer any questions you might have about the organization. We hope you have Skills-tastic Day!
