Bond Referendum for Buildings
Quality public schools are at the core of thriving communities. Many families report choosing to live in District 196 because of the quality of the schools, the opportunities for students and our Triple-A, whole-child approach to learning through academics, arts and athletics. Quality schools keep demand for housing strong and property values higher.
To ensure adequate and appropriate space to continue the quality of education District 196 families expect, a district committee conducted a nearly two-year review of facilities and equipment needs and developed a phased master plan to address needs in three areas.
- Safety and Security
- Space for Growth
- Consistent Experience
Improvements are proposed to address these needs in a two-question bond referendum election scheduled for Tuesday, May 9, 2023 (early voting begins March 24).
Parking Lot Safety: IMPORTANT
- PLEASE drive slowly though out the parking lot: Please take care in our parking lot when dropping off your student please remember that your student will not get to class on time if they are not in the parking lot by 7:30 am.
- Follow the drop off and pick up procedures: If you are dropping off or picking up a student, please also do not drive in the parked car lanes or block the marked crosswalks; this is unsafe for both drivers and pedestrians.
Please remember the entrance lane on the right side is marked for drop-off, and after dropping off, please move to the left to the through lane. Please do NOT pick up students in the through lane at pick-up time. During winter months the snow may cover the marked lines, please adhere to the safety procedure.
Please share this information with family members, siblings of students, and anyone who drives in the AVHS parking lot during the school day.
E-Learning Days: What Students and Families Need to Know
On the morning of an E-Learning Day at AVHS, students should...
- Bring their district-issued iPad or Chromebook home with them each day.
- Check Schoology for instructions from their teachers after 9:30 am for that day’s assignment. There will be no synchronous (Zoom) office-hour sessions.
- Plan to spend approximately 25 minutes for each of their classes to complete all assigned work.
- Contact their teacher through Schoology messenger if they have questions or need assistance. Teachers will be available between 9:30 am and 3 pm to respond to questions.
You can support your student as a parent or guardian by...
- Establishing a designated workspace and time for them to work on assignments.
- Asking how their coursework is going and what they are working on.
- Accessing Schoology Parent Portal to view course expectations for the day and other key information.
What happens if school is delayed or canceled due to the weather?
If ever wondering if there is a change to the school schedule due to weather, go to the Weather-Related Schedule Changes page. For the first two inclement weather days each year, school is canceled. Any after two would be E-Learning Days, with students learning from home.
Know if your child's bus will be late or delayed
Parents whose students ride the bus to and from school each day can track the location of their child’s bus using the smartphone application "Here Comes The Bus," which is available to download free on the Google Play Store for Android and App Store for iPhone. Parents can monitor buses for multiple children through a single account. Click here for information on setting up an account.

MCA Day March 15: SCHEDULE CHANGE
On the morning of Wednesday, March 15, high schools in District 196 will administer the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) Reading (Grade 10) and Math (Grade 11) tests. Students in grades 10 and 11 will report to school at the usual time. They will proceed to assigned classrooms and take the state-mandated MCA test on their school iPad from 7:40 am to 9:50 am.
Students in Grades 9 and 12 will not be required to report to school until 10:00 am that day. For students who arrive before 10:00 am, breakfast and quiet study space will be provided in the cafeteria and commons area.
Starting at 10:00 am, AVHS will proceed with a schedule that includes time for students in all seven of their daily class periods. Students who do not take the test on March 15 will be required to take the test during regular classes sometime in March or April.
For more detailed information, please CLICK HERE.
What Do SES and Career Development Students Do on MCA Test Day?
MCA Testing will occur at Apple Valley High School and Rosemount High School on Wednesday, March 15th.
The general rule from the District Office is that students will not travel during these two days. However, some students may still do so because it works in their schedule and they don’t want to miss their Career Development/School of Environmental Science classes.
Teachers were asked to review options with their students again today and will be flexible with students' attendance. If you have questions about a specific Career Development or SES class, please get in touch with that teacher directly.
First Day of Tri 3: Monday, March 13
- Students will start their day at 7:40 am in their ADVISORY.
- Students will have the opportunity to check their schedule and ask questions in Advisory.
- Please check in with your student to make sure they have reviewed their new class schedule in Campus.
