Limited Goverment
A principle in which the power of the government is limited. Everyone must obey the laws including the president.
Ex. The United States of America has a limited government.
Separation of Powers
Division of powers among the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches.
Ex. The 3 branches of American government Legislative, Judicial, and Executive branches.
Checks and Balances
Each branch of government can check the powers of the other branches to prevent any branch of the government from br coming too powerful.
Ex. The Executive branch can veto bills from the Legislative, but the Legislative can override the veto.
Popular Sovereignty
A government in which the people rule the consent of the ruled governed.
Ex. In America we get to vote on who we think is fit to be our President.
Republicanism
A form of government in which people elect representatives to create and enforce laws.
Ex. Americans vote on a president they want to represent America.
Individual Rights
Basic rights of the people these are protected in the Bill of Rights.
Ex. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Federalism
A system in which power is divided between the national and state governments.
Ex. A state could not pass a law directly contradicted to a law passed on federal level.
