Spirit Week!

Principal's Message

Hello Astor Families!

Happy New Year! The cold and rainy weather is here and so is 2022. We are excited to see you all after this past winter break and hope that it was restful and filled with family and friends. We wrapped up the last day of school in December with a great spirit week and the Middle School Winter Wonderland event. MS students made crafts, listened to music and danced while outside and masked. It was a great celebration and made possible by our MS leadership students and Astor PTSO. Thank you!

A huge thank you to our Astor community and PTSO. Together, we raised over $3500 for our families. This is an incredible achievement and it has made a large impact on our community. If you would like to learn more about the PTSO and be a part of their work for our community, then check out the link here - astorptso.org - This amazing parent, teacher, and student group continues to provide great opportunities and support our school in so many ways!

Finally, as cases are increasing, we'll keep you up to date with any district wide news. Thank you parents for calling in to let us know about exposures and positive cases. It ensures the heath and safety of our community. We understand that this time is difficult and uncertain for many, so please do not hesitate to reach out to our counseling team for support or resources. You can reach them through calling the office (503-916-6244) or by email here. If your child is out, then please connect with your teacher for any work that can be emailed home or check out the district remote learning site here.

We wish you a healthy and safe month. Please reach out to our office if you have any questions or need anything.

Warmly,

Blake Robertson

Principal @ Astor

Test to Stay Program

As part of our ongoing commitment to increase in-person learning for all students, we are pleased to announce that in partnership with OHA/ODE we will start the Test to Stay program the first week of January of 2022.

Benefits of Test to Stay: Given the lower level of COVID-19 in schools, students exposed at school will have the opportunity to stay in in-person learning and minimize the impact quarantine has had on their education. This is called a modified quarantine and requires students to continue to wear masks during any activity that does not require its use, for example band, athletics, etc., until day eight (8). Students must remain symptom free and will be provided two tests during their quarantine period. You can help expedite the process by signing and returning the consent form for the BinaxNOW rapid nasal swab test, unless you already did it this year. Forms are available in the front office of each school.

For students who were exposed outside of the school day (at home, extracurricular activities, etc), we will have available the Test to Return process. This process will allow students to return on Day 8 after an exposure with any negative antigen or pcr COVID-19 test performed between days 5-7.

As always, vaccinated students who do not have symptoms do not have to quarantine or Test to Stay. We will share more specifics about this program in early January. 5-Step Process for Parents and Families

Letter from the Health Room

Dear Astor Families,

Thank you all for helping to keep Astor a safe learning environment this year in the face of many challenges, including the spread of COVID-19 in our community. As we continue into the new year, we want to remind you to keep your student(s) home if they are feeling unwell. Even if your child does not have COVID-19, it is important that we also prevent the spread of colds, the flu, or other contagious ailments. Below, we have included a reminder of the guidelines for when to keep your sick child home, as well as information on student health services and vaccine clinics that will be open during winter break.

Keep your child home and inform the school if they or anyone else in your household:

  • Has been in close contact with someone with COVID-19 (close contact = within 6 feet for at least 15 cumulative minutes a day)

  • Is sick and being tested for COVID-19

  • Has tested positive for COVID-19

  • Has a fever of 100.4 °F or higher, chills, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, a new or worsening cough, or a new loss of taste or smell

  • Has a new undiagnosed rash, sores, diarrhea, or vomiting

COVID-19 Pediatric and School Vaccine Clinic

If you are interested in getting your child a COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine, childhood vaccines required by schools, or flu shots, there are two new vaccine clinics that have open availability on Wednesdays and Saturdays. They focus on reaching people who are Black, Indigenous, Latino, Pacific Islander, Asian, or other people of color, immigrants, refugees, and people without health insurance or a regular healthcare provider. Appointments required for children aged 5 - 11. No appointment required for family members to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and flu shots.

  • Hours: Wednesdays 11:00am-2:00pm, 3:00pm-6:00pm; Saturdays 9:00am-12:00pm, 1:00pm-4:00pm

  • Call 503-988-8939 to make an appointment, and find more information at multco.us/vaccineclinics

  • Flier for clinics, including location and more information, are attached below

We appreciate your continued support and efforts to keep the Astor community healthy.

The PTSO Needs Grant Writers

Dear Astor Families,

Do you have experience researching and completing financial grant applications?

The Astor PTSO is committed to providing Astor students with the best education and experiences possible. We've been working hard to develop aggressive goals and visions for what more we can offer students, ranging from drama performances, new school and playground equipment, and upgrading facilities. This of course requires funding and we need your assistance in securing funding from the grant programs that are available.

Please email fundraising@astorptso.org to learn more about how you can help our school and community - Thank you!
